What is it about Xingyiquan that cured you? I know in those Chinese martial arts they have an emphasis on breathing/life energy. Was that it?

The breathing and stuff is part of it but the real +++ for me I think was the basic training, which consists of long periods of standing meditation, as well as basic short forms and neigong (which is a sort of taoist yoga)The movements in these types of martial arts are super super ergonomic, they dont really put undue stress on you physically. Imagine the modern body as say, a set of leaky pipes. A life of sitting down and studying and specialized sports can kind of put a lot of kinks, stiffness, and basically impedes your own natural energy and strength. These arts cultivate whole body power in a very relaxed and comfortable fashion. It's not EASY though, by any means. You sweat and hold hard stances and in my school, we have a harder conditioning set of pushups and one legged squats, iron body training, and cardiovascular kicking skills. It's not all 'internal' training. It's just that that natural, coordination and smoothness is cultivated and emphasized heavily from the start in these arts.

believe it or not, biking was my cure.
my hamstrings and lower back must be scarred and prone to tightness after the initial injury. keeping them active and flexible is what keeps it from fukking me up...last time it happened i was having back spasms and it took me 20 minutes to get out of bed with my girl's help.

worst feeling ever when your body is no longer yours.
:wow: there is a great saying out there... "exercise can be a substitute for medicine, but there is no substitute for exercise", and you really learn that when you incur a major injury.

My Chiropractor said to me If I would've waited 6 more months to a year to seek help I would've have been paralyzed. I was like....:merchant::wow:

Yup..... When you get that injury, you really gotta work on it as soon as a healthcare professional says you can. You gotta start working on it, building up your auxiliary muscles to strengthen the joint, and honestly? Getting back that endurance is a bytch. It's crazy how much stamina you lose from injuries like that. But you just gotta keep on trucking, and cultivating that health or it'll never really heal.

yup.

the degradation of muscles, motion and flexibility due to lack of use happens very quickly and the initial period when you try to get it back is a bytch.

once you get over that point you can get back to some normalcy.

Not as much as it used to. I've been doing a lot of San Ti standing, Wang Ji Wu's neigong set, and a Horse neigong (referring to the XY animal, not the horse stance) exercise thats kind of explosive and it's been feeling fine recently even though my work/research schedule has picked up. I think it's the Fan Lang jin/back or spinal wave power in Xingyi that's popping the kinks out.

Problem was I was 22 when I got my injury and I waited 6 more years to seek help..( yes being stupid ) I ended up losing my whole core muscles, lost back support....gain massive weight and other problems ensued( Border-Line Diabetic), lost testosterone. It took a whole year or so to lose the massive weight, strengthen my core and strengthen my back. Years later... Im much better...stronger.

If I could've went back in time in what I know now to the injury...I would've jumped on it right then and there

Might have to get back into martial arts again for healing....

Yeah man. Luckily I had people warning me and encouraging me the whole time, plus at the time I was feeling so belligerent about the whole thing. I was really mad at myself (even though it was an accident) and feeling beleaguered. But I am very lucky. I only had a transverse fracture and required no surgery, it was a clean break. The nerve damage didnt paralyze me longer than a couple of weeks either.

Yeah man. It truly is the best rehab. What's your experience? I did TKD and some Baji as a kid, wrestling in high school, picked up some boxing and Muay Thai in college, and I was going back to Bajiquan right before the injury. Then i met my Xingyi teacher through my Thai instructor, and I'm pretty much dedicated to learning the whole system through and through. I may also learn Baguazhang later. I like the MA mostly for self cultivation purposes to be honest.

Glad things are working out for you that's my word....my spine was completely straight instead of curved and nerve damage would go from one end of my body to the next causing massive pain and what would feel like someone was placing my limbs on fire....luckly I didn't wait any longer.

:wow: i know what that's like man. That fire/needles feeling. I realize that it's still there on some level in my feet and right calf, but i dont think my brain actively notices it anymore. I guess I've adjusted.

Man, I know you fukk with daoist theory and health practices. You're in your 30's right? I really think you should find a teacher of Xingyiquan, Baguazhang, Taijiquan, Liuhebafa, Mizongyi, or hell even Bajiquan if you wanna get back in the game. It's definitely worth it to me. I personally think you will enjoy the combination of combative/health/meditative practices in here. I know you do some qigong etc, and these arts have their own complimentary methods that are really great for health, strength, and other specialized purposes...If you're interested, Feel free to PM me your location or w/e and I can get my master or some other people i know to find you someone good.

You know I dont particularly ascribe to the more esoteric notions of Qi.... But I do think that there is something very sensible and wonderful about the taoist overview of how the mind, spirit, and body come together to make who we are. When I met my grandteacher Ping Zhen Cheng (a sun style lineage holder and a master of various methods of neigong and tibetan yoga), he told me that the true essence of neigong and martial arts training was not truly about cultivating Qi or preserving Jing, but about realizing and optimizing your Shen and learning your true nature. That that is the nature of post-heaven training, to make yourself more YOU. I don't quite get the more metaphysical aspects of this stuff yet experientially, but the journey is great.
