I get what you're saying about perspective. you're right - i based my response on what I would consider Horror., from a personal pov. I definitely didn't have an appreciation for The Shining went I saw it at first, bc back in the day, I was more into the serial killer, freddy, michael myers/jason type "physical" horror as opposed to paranormal or psychological. Micheal and Co. scared me, but then again, elementary school age kids shouldn't be watching that in the first place. As that subgenre bc more redundant, I became more interested in "cerebral" horror. That foreboading tension and conflict type films.I’ve listened to two podcasts discussing this very topic of what’s horror and what’s not. Both recent episodes too.
For me, it always comes down to tone and intention. Kubrick was clearly trying to scare people therefore it’s horror. Whether it scares us personally shouldn’t factor into that, at least I don’t think so. That whole movie is creepy and packed with dread and filled with just weird ass imagery.
The directors of the Friday the 13th flicks are intending to scare the audience. Them shyts don’t scare me one bit tho lol but they’re still horror flicks.
