Dan Stapleton over at GameSpy managed to get some hands-on time with Borderlands 2. He does a fine write-up of the stuff you would expect from an FPS loot-grinding sequel. However, at the very end of the write-up he asks Gearbox's design producer, Randy Varnell whether Borderlands would consider a loot-based auction house like a Real-Money Auction House and Varnell lets it all hang out.

Expounding on Varnell's response, Stepleton writes...
...since Borderlands 2 is such a loot-driven game, will we see a Real-Money Auction House like Diablo 3's show up in the future? "I would say it would be unlikely," he answered. Whew! "It's certainly something that we're watching with great interest." Uh oh. "I know a lot of people are thinking about it and seeing where it is, but getting good loot from drops and creatures in the game is so important to the growth and the experience, and really the fun. It's what the loot games are really all about, you know?" Whew!
The main thing to take away from this is that Varnell basically makes it known (like probably every other developer out there) that they're watching the progress of the Real-Money Auction House with great interest because plain and simple, an RMAH enables a developer (and more likely the publisher) to create a revenue stream simply from player trades. As a company, you're making money basically on nothing more than players trading loot. Of course everyone is watching with interest.

The good part about it is that Borderlands 2 is two months out from release. An RMAH is practically impossible to implement within that time frame and it's something that would have to be considered more-so for Borderlands 3. Hopefully, it's not being considered for Borderlands 3 because as a lot of gamers have already expressed, an RMAH takes all the fun out of adventuring in a fictional world for cool loot. Added to this, the RMAH dictates loot drops for everyone who plays the game, which is really unfortunate for people who just want to log-in for a little while and loot-grind for a bit.

That's also not to mention that if Gearbox followed suit behind Blizzard, you'd have a game where the multiplayer is restrictive; always-on would be required to use the RMAH and it's likely that there would be no client-side offline mode.

I don't think I really need to explain how much worse Borderlands as a franchise would be if it utilized a real-money auction house and I'm glad Varnell sees that finding good drops is half the fun, something that becomes obsolete with the presence of an RMAH.

That's also not to mention all the legal hassles that come along with an RMAH and players who are currently losing money to policy loopholes in Blizzard's RMAH.

Thankfully, Borderlands 2 will be RMAH-free and we can all cheer about that on our way to local retailers to pick the game up this September. You can check out the entire article over at GameSpy.

Man, I keep staring at this game meaning to play it, and haven't taken the plunge yet. I got the GOTY Edition for like $10-$12 at some point from Amazon. When deals like that happen, they're too good to pass up.

I watched a video the other day on Borderlands 2, and it looked dope. I think the only reason I haven't put it in yet is the cel shading. Never been a big fan of that.

TORONTO!
Bought the first game recently, shyt ain't really clicking with me like it do for everyone else. I like just having a game where i can run around and shoot stuff but overall it's a little too simplistic. Still gonna run around shooting stuff til i cant no more but even if my opinion changes, my first priority FPS this year is Medal of Honor

Borderlands 2's development is done and finished. The team finalized the code and has shipped off the game to be finalized during the certification process, from then on it's on to shipping and manufacturing and then...that's right, it's prepped to go inside your DVD player and give you the time of your life with gungasms you've never experienced before.

The news comes courtesy of the official Gearboxity community website, where a small blog post lets the community know that Borderlands 2 is all prettied up for certification, saying...

"This means that the game’s on-disc content has been locked down and will be thoroughly tested to ensure it is ready for release -– in other words, the game is finished and we cannot make any further changes to the game. As such, the team is now shifting their focus towards post-launch efforts, including the Mechromancer: the new character class that will be released as FREE downloadable content to members of the Borderlands 2 Premiere Club roughly 60 to 90 days after launch."

Well, so long as the DLC isn't finished BEFORE the game goes gold and isn't disc-locked away, it's all good. I also like how they want people to know that they're only working on the DLC after the main game is finished. It's important for gamers to know that the final product is actually final and isn't shipping with a ton of bugs, glitches and errors. There's nothing worse than knowing that devs are working on DLC before the main game is finished and working on DLC while the main game is broken.

Personally, I can't wait for Borderlands 2 but in some regards I'm kind of glad I have to wait because there are a few games I still have yet to finish. Regardless, the idea that the game is bigger, badder and has more guns than all the Mexican cartel's caches combined instantly makes Borderlands 2 one of the most anticipated and original shooters since...well, 2009's Borderlands.

You can look for Borderlands 2 to launch for home consoles and PC on September 21st. You can pre-order the game right now if you really, really, really want that Mechromancer DLC or feel free to learn more by paying a visit to the Official Website.

Gearbox has sent out another fun gameplay trailer for co-op shooter Borderlands 2. It doesn't provide any new insights into B2 but serves as a good overview for anyone who hasn't been tracking this game.

Players will once again have four characters to choose from. Salvador is a burly fellow who can dual-wield any two guns in the game. Axton is a soldier who can deploy turrets to assist in firefights. Sneakier players will flock to Zer0, who can vanish or create decoy versions of himself. Maya, a Siren like B1's Lilith, has powerful magical abilities at her disposal including Phaselock.

The trailer doesn't show the fifth playable character, Mechromancer. The Mechromancer is a red-headed cyborg with the ability to summon a robot in combat. This character will be available at launch exclusively to pre-order customers. Everyone else will have to wait until after launch for the chance to buy access to the Mechromancer.

Regardless of what class you pick, a few things will remain the same. You'll be able to team up with three friends and shoot up hordes of enemies across Pandora. In the process, you'll acquire hundreds upon hundreds of randomized, customizable guns.

By now you're likely aware that Borderlands 2, just like its predecessor, will feature about a kabillion and one different guns to put holes in, fry, electrocute or explode your enemies. Also like the first game, Borderlands 2 will feature firepower from various manufacturers, like Tediore. Speaking of Tediore, Gearbox has now launched a commercial to familiarize consumers with the benefits of their particular brand of boom-stick.

In the original Borderlands the various gun manufacturers did little more than give the firearms a slightly different look or color scheme. Which company's guns you were using didn't really make much of a difference to the end result of bad guys losing the ability to breathe.

In Borderlands 2, each manufacturer's guns will become known for various advantages and weaknesses, as well as offer the player some loyalty boosts for sticking with a particular company. Here's the animated commercial for Tediore, highlighting the reload speed for this particular line of guns.
