I am not arguing an increase but are you thinking half the women in our society would be sex workers all of sudden?

Of course not...

Now I'm just making up numbers for the sake of this example here,

Let's say 1 in 20 women are prostitutes now while it's illegal.

Let's say we do legalize it...and that number increases to say 5 in 20.

Is that a good thing?

We'll agree to disagree then.

I think that the black market which doesn't operate on the same playing field as the legal one, would actually grow. Both markets would be available instead of just one. Which would translate into a larger number of people with STDs and other problems.

I also personally think that legalization would increase the number of consumers and products. Whether that's something socially acceptable is up to the individual. I on the otherhand, don't think so.

I'd think the number of STDs would decrease if brothels were regulated. They could require the sex workers to use condoms and have periodic STD tests (or risk losing their licenses), and maybe bar people who are known to have STDs.

Whether the market for sex workers would grow is hard to say, IMO. How do you measure what the market is when it's illegal? The vast majority of prostitution that goes on isn't reported anyway. But I find it hard to imagine that women who otherwise wouldn't be prostitutes would be lining up for the job just because it was legalized .

I am sure there was little to no regulation of the sex market in the 1940s.
A legalized sex market today would have regulations in place that saw to it that all interactions are done as safely as possible with condoms being mandatory for all acts and workers being regularly tested for STDs as well as for drugs.
I would have to assume that if done correctly the chances of contracting a disease would drop considerably from the figures we see currently as well as taking out the violence and drug use that is rampant in the illegal sex industry.

Who wants to be told to do when it comes to sex?

Have you been to a strip club? The only people being taken advantage of are the men and their wallets.

$11 for a Black and Mild :ohlawd:

are we having a serious conversation here? I know about the strip club and about strippers. there's a lot of money to be made, but there's also a lot of bullshyt to get caught up in

is it something you'd like your kids to get involved in?

Whether it is a good or bad thing would be based on your own personal morality.
I would not want my child to go into that industry but I also don't want my kid being a garbageman or working at McDonald's either.

We are having a serious discussion. Men are being taken advantage of. It isn't all "doom and gloom, my uncle touched me now I'm a stripper" shyt. Some of those women are college educated and know they can't make over $100k anywhere else. It isn't all drugged up, molested women.

As for my kids, of course not, but I wouldn't want to see them get involved in something like running for political office or investment banking either.

That is a very poor opinion of women if you think the mast majority of them only want to contribute to society by laying on there back. :manny:

the "mast majority"? :heh:

I didn't say anything about the majority. just that it would make being a sex-worker a more viable and possibly more popular option for women. and I don't think many will see reverting back to 'the oldest profession' as 'progress'. that's the thing, legalized prostitution isn't some new progressive idea, it's part of the past

so your saying a quarter of women would be prostitutes. :heh:

not really a bad thing in my opinion but for those numbers to be that high we need to be more accepting of sex workers and way less options for women. I am sure it was like that in Italy during the Renaissance.

The rate in STDs from legalized brothels would decrease, I agree there. It's the inflated black market is where my concern would begin. Also I'm not a fan of simply more women becoming prostitutes as a profession approved of by the State. I think it sends a terrible message to the general public.

And how do you measure the market when a product is illegal? The same way the DEA does with drugs.

To each his own. I don't think it improves society 1 iota...but then again that's just my personal preference.

Not really an improvement but more of an coming to terms with our true nature. Men are horny and are willing to pay for sex why outlaw this victim less crime? If you don't want to take a part in it then don't but why deny others?

For the same reasons I've explained earlier. If men are horny...buy some porn jack off in private and keep the problems to a minimum.
