yes

i guarantee companies see applications and see the name Laquianta Adams or Devante Harris and they push them to the side

Maybe they just don't know much about African names and naming customs, but at least they try to connect.

Everything that Black people do is examined more critically anyway. White people name their kids Hunter, Moon Unit, Peyton, Kyle and stupid shyt like that, but nobody says shyt.

Guarantee if blacks started using regular anglo names en masse again, the people who discriminate based on names would learn which names are most popular among blacks and start discriminating against those.

Name your son Leroy or your daughter Bertha and lets see if they get an interview.

The problem ain't the name.

I think there's a difference between names that are culturally black and names that are just ghetto and stupid.

Yes it does and I believe this is because it signifies that you are from a lower class or certain demographic (even if you aren't). OP also mentioned Indian names being hard to pronounce or spell, but people look at that differently than they look at "made up" "ghetto" names.

My sister's name sounds made up, so she started using her middle name which was a simple "Mae" and saw the doors opening for her.

The main issue is your name may keep you from even getting to the interview, but if you can at least get to the interview you have a better chance of getting the job. I think parents need to think about that more often. If you want to name your kids that, maybe that can be their middle name and the name you call them or vice versa (have the name they use for jobs be their middle name).

Obviously yeah because we live in a judgmental society and many people that are in a position of power are going to make negative assumptions about someone that has a certain type of name. That puts them at a disadvantage.

People in this thread defending these ghetto ass names. Yes your name will effect future prospects. It is what it is :yeshrug: I have a very ethnic name and it hasn't held me back i believe people give ethnic names a pass but they do discriminate against historical ghetto names.

Names can be ghetto for the simple fact that if the parents weren't in that enviroment they wouldn't have given their seeds those names and truth is some of them are stupid AF! A home girl of mine changed her name it was originally Dwayndra
:gucci: a combo of Dwayne and Sandra. An old coworker had twins and gave them some shytty rhyming name Jalinqua and laniqua :scust:

Whether it is right or wrong it doesn't change the fact there is empirical evidence that people with black names face a racial bias with job applications.

Having a black name or AA only saves you gas money by not receiving a on site interview.....

I have a CAC name and my interviews go like this... phone interviewer voice :gladbron: hiring manager phone interviewer voice :gladbron: onsite interviewer face :beli::mjpls:

the problem is, there is NO Diversity in talent acquisition and hiring managers.. all of them are CAC's .... this is how CAC's stay in control of the workforce

shyt is fukked up :francis:

See people like you who make these statements always forgot one thing this is a screening process so if an employer doesn't want to hire black candidates ...your name being ethnic will elimnate them calling but if your name john davis and your black u past the first process and guess what ur still black ..that won't change their mind all of sudden

Good Statement. To be real... If the employer is pushing my application to the side because my name is too black. To be real I don't want to work for them anyways

How do you know that priyanka has a meaning? You just assume that it does.

How do you know that Shaniqua has no meaning or origin? It could have been a corruption of some other name. Name corruption happens all the time.
Because a friend of mine is punjabi

You're name is akan im assuming your Ghanaian. All Ghanaian names have meanings don't they:stopitslime:

And a lot of the so-called ghetto names are really European names spelled different and with a unique suffix or prefix added to it.

For example Marcus is European in origin but becomes 'ghetto' when prefixes like ja or da get added to it all of a sudden. DaMarcus. JaMarcus.

Shawn to DaShawn

Good point.

Some names just get associated with us because old school white people used those names, but young white people don't. Tyrone Murphy.....Davin Smith.....sounds like some brehs, but are actually super common Irish names.

Many of us will use Arabic names, though I cringe a little when black Americans do this. We exalt the virtues of Islam while forgetting the Arabs weren't any better than whites when dealing with us. Having said that, up to 40% of the African people shipped to the Americas were Muslim...so it at least makes since with people name their child Khadijah, Muhammad, Jamal etc. I think where we get into trouble is just being extra. Jontavious, Shaquanetria, DaVontre.....I personally don't see anything "wrong" with the names but I also understand that it CAN make your child's life a little more difficult. The flip side is that if your kid is smart, talented, athletic etc., a unique name makes them stand out even more.

For years I thought Natasha and Tasha were ghetto names. Then I saw an article with this old white lady named Natasha and was like "There's an old white woman named Natasha?" and my homegirl was like...Natasha is a popular Russian name for a girl. Had me like :ohhh:

A lot of names stereotypically pinned to be ghetto are of European, African or Arab/Semitic origin.

Tyrone = Celtic branch
Shavon = Celtic branch
Jamal = Semitic
Kevon = Celtic
Tanisha = Indo European
Malik = Arabic
Tanika/Tanya = English origin

AA names by and large are not randomized and a lot of the time they're suffixed names with a range of spelling as @ba'al pointed out.

The names OP listed are all ironically Germanic and Afro-Asiatic in roots. Needra is in like four different language groups. Demetric is an offshoot of Demetrius.

A very unique AA naming trend is adding romance language preffixes like La Da De and Ja to naming and has a long history.

Your thinking is kind of ludicrous considering a good chunk of female names today are offshoot male names with additional suffixes or the city names for the male variant. Alexandria (Alexander), Lucy (Lucius), Patricia (Patrick).

Feminizing already existing male names is an age old practice so why would this be any different.

You assume wrong. I am AA. Akan is one of the ethnic groups that I match genetically. I also have a picture of Samory Toure in my Avi. He was a Mandingo who fought the French during colonialism. So I am part Mandingo too.

So your assumptions is where the problem lies. A name like Shaniqua is one that is easily subject to corruption, because back in the day midwives commonly misspelled names during the birthing process of Black people; and that is what went on birth certificates. So the name could have been a corruption of some other name. Over time other Black people may have just heard the name and liked it for their own children, not realizing that it was a corruption of some other name. That is why you should not assume shyt.
