Do you think ghetto names really affect a child's chance in life?

You have fukking east indians and arabs with names so god damn hard to pronounce it's not even funny and a lot of them are still able to succeed and do fine here. I think it could hurt in some cases but I don't think it would be a complete handicap on that person's life especially not if they are a diligent, intelligent, and opportunistic person.

Right, shaniqua is a problem but priyanka and Netsanet are fine. :martin:

Exactly. A lot of these different ethnic groups have unique and abnormal names in a western standard and are still able to do fine.

And a lot of so-called ghetto names aren't even ghetto in the first place and are actually common names in other places we just spell them differently. Dontay is Dante in latin for example. Op said Demetric which goes back to the Greek goddess Demeter

yes

i guarantee companies see applications and see the name Laquianta Adams or Devante Harris and they push them to the side

See people like you who make these statements always forgot one thing this is a screening process so if an employer doesn't want to hire black candidates ...your name being ethnic will elimnate them calling but if your name john davis and your black u past the first process and guess what ur still black ..that won't change their mind all of sudden

Maybe they just don't know much about African names and naming customs, but at least they try to connect.

Everything that Black people do is examined more critically anyway. White people name their kids Hunter, Moon Unit, Peyton, Kyle and stupid shyt like that, but nobody says shyt.

I have a lil cousin who's name is the beginning of both the mom and pops birth months....And it came out ghetto sounding. Had nothing to do with "connecting" they just thought it was cool to combine their birth months.

All I'm saying is that u gotta tell both sides. Some of these parents just be making up shyt that sounds cliche and stereotypical.

Now u right about white people naming their kids whatever.....But this is a response to the question OP asked about names and employment approval, we talking about the status Quo and already know that there will emphasis on wether a name on a resume sounds "Ghetto." So pointing out what whitefolks name their kids is irrelevant. Employer sees the first name is "Hunter"...Employer(white or Black) might let the resume pass. Employer sees the name "Imunique" and he might give it the MJ please face.

I don't think OP is talking about the difficulty to pronounce.
I think he's more talking about the negative stereotype that having an African American sounding name carries.

But i do agree with your latter points.

So all of those damn English and Scottish last names of Smith, Brown, Jones, Johnson, Neal, etc., are not a dead give away that the person is probably Black? I think that they would figure the shyt out anyway, once your ass came in for the interview. I guess if you are saying that it is just to get an interview then the name might be an issue, but once you actually show up the party is over anyway.

Btw, I don't even think that the names are the issue, because athletes and entertainers have desensitized the public on that shyt. The elephant in the room is that we are Black. That is is the issue.

Absolutely, and those ones you mentioned aren't even close to the worst ones i've seen.

In TN i knew 3 guys and 1 girl named "Blaze":mjlol:
And all 4 of them spelled it differently.:mjlol:
I knew a kid named Dodge:mjlol:
One girl in Nashville was River-Anne (no bullshyt):mjlol:

Whether it is right or wrong it doesn't change the fact there is empirical evidence that people with black names face a racial bias with job applications.

In fact, companies are more than twice as likely to call minority applicants for interviews if they submit whitened resumes than candidates who reveal their race—and this discriminatory practice is just as strong for businesses that claim to value diversity as those that don’t.

We need resources and connections we can't afford to think from any other mindset than providing seeds for the next generation. And part of that is playing the system in the most efficient manner. What is the point of black individuality if we're all confined to the lowest rungs of society for the next 200 years?

You could still flip it with middle eastern names being linked with terrorism in the west if you want to go with the stigma narrative. Not just the pronunciation of names.
