Breh it’s redunkulous these days. They all cater to that CrossFit crowd who’d happily throw $150 to hit a heavy bag, but don’t follow the sport.

I usually try to talk it up with owner and tell em I just wanna work the bags I don’t need coaching and try to get a discount.

the gym i used to go to keep my hands sharp from time to time i paid like 800 bucks for a punch card membership :heh:

You must be rich?:wow:
my health insurance at the time reimbursed all that back to me via fitness reimbursement form i filled..usually they reimburse like 150 max..but something had changed at the time for it and they reimbursed the full amount...so i was good..that punchcard was like good for i think like 45 day visits or some shyt like that..there were cheaper memberships but they were memberships were I would have to make it my primary gym..and that wasn't happening at the time...so it was useful for time to time things

Back when I was training and competing in the mid-2000s gyms were free for those who wanted to learn the art. Nowadays a breh has to pay an arm and a leg just to learn how to throw a few combos :mjcry:

Boxing gyms done turned commercial and I hate it :scust:

Yeah shyt is all fukked up. Motherfukkers want you to sign up credit card details at the front door of most of these joints.

How old were you?
I've seen trainers/gyms train YOUNG kids for free if they look like they have potential
Makes sense since trainers only have so much time in the day, if a 35 yr old is going to be taking up time might as well make him pay
I saw Chip Hart, Jesse Hart brother, flat out tell a dude to gtfo out his face cause he was fat as hell and like 30. He only wanted to work with younger guys
That fat dude actually was dedicated as hell and wound up losing like 100+ lbs or something crazy. I don't think he ever boxed professionally or anything so it was no "potential" there for chip :yeshrug:
My trainer charged me $40 a month cause i wasn't serious about competing
his biggest fighter at the time was Kamarah Pasley who was older than me actually but competing and i'm sure he paid nothing

800? :dahell: gawd damn :wow:

65 is my limit, fukk all of that I dont need any fancy shyt, a whole in the wall gym will do :camby:

yeah...but it was convenient...cuz it was visit by visit basis...if it had more in the way of actual gym equipment i would have used it as my primary gym

my old hardcore gym had a really dedicated boxing room and at one time had an actual boxing gym on top of it...and as long as i paid membership to the hardcore gym i could use all the facilities up stairs free of charge.....they dont make that gyms like that no more

Is using different price per person regardless of age group or anything even legal?
Jesse Hart's brother sounds like an a$$hole :gucci: Why be like that with poor b*stard? Could have just said no without cursing him out I guess

:sadbron:I know the feeling re simpleton abc's Japanese language, thankfully they're a polite nation and well versed in English a lot of the time.

I visited
  • Teiken gym in Tokyo (Linares, Valero, Watanabe, Gonzalez, many Japanese bantamweight and flyweight champs so on). Serious gym, worth a visit.
  • Tried a lot of gyms to train in Tokyo but was complicated and needed memberships etc.
  • Visited Ohashi gym in Yokohama. Inoue's Gym. Serious operation, but all fine to check out.
Trained at
  • Trained casually a couple of times in Yokohama and Osaka at Ioka gym (Ioka i think? Yuki Nonaka etc) Great gym, good people.
Understand the sentiments re holidays and training. More often than not ill be on a holiday, eating, drinking, smoking like a motherfukker, get guilty, get my run and train on.
:ohhh: Some of you on here have been in Japanese gyms and shyt... that's interesting
Their system is just a whole lot different than the Western one. I mean the gym system

Yeah, they spar at full pace. I just did my own thing and then one of the trainers asked me if i wanted to do some pad work.

This happened in both gyms in Osaka and Yokohama. Whole gym was cool as fukk, from the pros down to the kids. I show respect in there, bow etc. The kids all thanked me for coming to the gym and bowed when they left.

Cool experience, really enjoyed it a lot.

Trainers don't even have to be certified. It's no rules to that game. Maybe when it comes to the Freddie Roach level or something you have a whole process and a contract etc
But in my experience you can pretty much walk into any gym in america and just approach a guy working with somebody and negotiate from there
Yea his brother did seem like an a$$hole but maybe it's where I'm from and the fact there are gym wars and all kinds of beefs going on but the boxing gym on a low level seems really toxic and full of unsavory type characters. The other response in here like about Japan seem way more friendly for newcomers. I come from a city known for "rough fighters" though (philly) so I think part of that culture is present in the gyms.

the bolded is pure facts...boxing gyms are nothing but straight hustle...you really have to watch yourself in there until you get to a certain point of rep and notoriety...cuz there are cats who are looking for any reason to beat you up..its not a game.
