Episode 8 wasn't just a shytty movie, RJ made a completely abysmal and shockingly bad story. It's amazing that the disney team (who were apparently star wars fans/ex-lucas team members) signed off on that shyt.

There’s nothing for him to build on or build with going forward. There’s no plot threads to explore or anything of the sort, and there’s no interesting characters either. The main villain is now just a generic maniacal bad guy who yells and loses all the time. The protagonist if you can even call her one, is as bad a Mary Sue as there’s ever been with no character arc of any kind, and everyone else is just a cardboard cutout with no agency, personality, or story arc either, not to mention the whole republic military is apparently reduced to 10-15 people who are mostly middle aged women apparently. While the empire is seemingly as strong as it’s ever been. The only way to fix it is to retcon the whole film and declare it non canon.
