What is left to say? We know that our progress has been stunted by institutionalized bigotry. I'd rather we start talking about our action plan to uplift each other, or how we get the most frustrated and dishearted among us to buy in to capitalism, or How we stigmatize our communities negative behaviors without ostrasizing those that practice them?

Article is on-point.

Black people who achieve a certain amount of financial success don't even bother with anyone they feel is beneath them.

It's disgusting.

Another problem I have with these neo-negro "black intellectuals."

They have no problem using big words to get their point across.

It's like they're trying to prove a point to their peers. "Hey, I'm smart! Look how many syllables I used in this sentence."

I don't even think that is the issue. The real problem is brain drain in our communities. We achieve financial stability and immediately go live in a majority white enclave, creating a situation were those of us that do better have very little interaction and impact on those who are struggling.

The first problem is the black intellectuals abandoned their communities once integration was implemented. They fled their own community and allowed foreigners to enter and exploit their people. They missed out on building a strong economic base which would have allowed for US to have more economic and political equity.

They thought they'd achieved Dr. King's Dream, but they definitely did not. And we still have not, regardless of how much the media attempts to pretend we have. Dr. King did not just want us to be able to vote and live next to massa.

Also, our idea of an intellectual has become skewed. There is a whole lot of bullshyt masquerading as intellectualism.

It's difficult for some black intellectuals to even have the desire to stay grounded with our community and stay involved. There are so many aspects to our community that they find disgusting or hopeless..... unrefined.

NTM, the stage they launched their careers from is Ivy league schools and mainstream organizations - they end up being so out of touch that they literally only have the ability to talk Down to black people, surrounded by white audiences.

The only time most black intellectuals address the community or ideas in a community- is when a real leader, controversial leader, person who is actually suggesting solutions and speaking about the real causes is gaining popularity. Those people are shut down and shut up by the intellectual community and are criticized by the mainstream institutions as being fridge.

Even though he didn't really answer the question Carl Hart has the right idea imo. Too many intellectuals in general believe they can cover a great variety of subjects with equal rigor and can often end up overextending themselves.Yet their misguided opinions on subjects outside their expertise can become even more popular than those of experts in that field. This issue can become even more amplified when you are dealing with a smaller group like Black intellectuals.

I would have been interested in seeing someone discuss how Black intellectuals who dabble in race related scholarship may take away focus/time/personal prestige from their main area of expertise.

I don't really understand the emphasis on race. It's just something people made up, because it's divisive and people feel the need to be evil to each other I guess.

This might rub y'all the wrong way, but why is it that Black intellectuals need to talk about race or "stay in their community"? That's like saying that women should all talk about "women issues" or feminism...do Indian or other Asian intellectuals talk about race? (honest question). And what's this obsession with "community" though? It's cool if someone wants to give back and all of that, but why would someone who has managed to get out of a tough situation want to go back/stay in the same predicament? I know the situation in the US is different but around here as soon as dudes manage to get out the banlieues you can be damn sure they're staying as far away as they can from them. People move up, but black people (same in Africa) love to try to keep them down on some "oh now he doesn't care about us" or "oh now he speaks like an educated guy". :snoop:
