I believe atheists and agnostics can live great lives without being religious. I don't necessarily think a belief in God will prevent nutcases from shooting up a pre-school or whatever.
Many of these mentally ill people have strong (if somewhat twisted) views about God and the Devil that motivate them to act out their hallucinations so in that case an argument could be made that religion is the cause of the devilishment.
I tend to think it's all in the mind, however...

Don't think u understand, friend. What I said was people interpret it wrong meaning they make it to suit themselves when in reality they know how it's supposed to be a certain way. Kind of how many people against religion pic a few verses and claim religion is violent but never discuss the context that part of the scripture is written. To interpret religion don't change it to suit your self, practice as its supposed to be, that's how you interpret it.
