Let's be honest, a lot of the problems from corruption to the warfare is down to the fact that people do not see themselves as a nation. If you don't identify with something then you don't give a fukk about it.

European states...China...Russia all formed organically (and often violently). Through conquering...treaties etc they managed to achieve a consensus.

On the other hand, we have artificial states cobbled together and the above process has never taken place yet the African Union holds that borders are basically sacrosanct.

So Coli, do you think these artificial states should be held in place and over time Africans will see themselves less as (insert tribe) and more as a national/citizen?

Or are we prolonging the misery of millions of people by chaining them together in an unworkable situation?

This is a good question you have posed. In Sudan case if i had it my way in the 1950's, the map would be drawn like this. Parts of Upper Egypt and North Sudan or maybe North East Sudan would be one country. The nuba mountains would be part of the new state of South Sudan, and Darfur would be part of present day Chad, since they were one country until 1916/

Do you see Sudan lasting another 20 years without losing another piece of its territory?

It really depends on many factors, one whether the current political party the NCP is dispose of, which will eventually happen. 2 whether the opposition follows through to their word, which means creating a equitable democratic government for all Sudanese and not the few in the Nile Valley or else where in Sudan then we are back to square one.. If that does not come to fruition then it is possible that the country will eventually disintegrate, but i still believe it is highly unlikely, since each region has a vested interest currently.

Do you believe Omar Bashir needs to be removed and NOW? And that he is a genocidal maniac bent on destroying much of African culture and even people in Sudan? Just wanted to ask you this since you're Northern Sudanese yourself.

I firmly believe that new African states will arise this century out of the colonial borders set by Europeans. We've already seen Eritrea and South Sudan. Somaliland is de facto an independent state. Some states will stay together. Others shall not.
Eritrea was originally apart of Ethiopia. And Somaliand was part of Somalia. Da fukk you talking bout?

Anyways, I think most of the countries in Southern Africa formed organically or its just that either southern African countries are more developed or don't have that many ethnic groups. So for them they don't really need to redraw their borders. Same with North Africa. West and East Africa seems to have the countries with large amounts of diverse ethnic groups, but also nations that had many states/kingdoms in it. For example Nigeria is a nation where before it had many separate kingdom/states that never interacted with each other like say Oyo empire and Kano state. But now they are al bunched together. But it gets worse with Mali when you have a nation dominated by Mande/Mandinka people and the other minorities being the Tuarag and Fulani. All three who were rivals with one another going back to the medieval times, but now they are all bunched together.

But in my opinion I don't think a nation like Nigeria should separate. Nigeria is a potential powerhouse if they stay together. A separate Nigeria would only become weaker imo. The north and south should work things out, but thats highly unlikely...

Maybe you should read him again, because you're not making sense. What he meant was that Eritrea and South Sudan are examples of African nations gaining their independence and "borders being redrawn." Basically other African countries will most likely follow along. He knows Eritrea was apart of Ethiopia. But I don't think Eritrea is a good example, because Eritrea has always historically been apart of Ethiopian kingdoms/empires.

I think they will in future. Too much diversity of tribes to have unification without one group thinking they are being short handed. I personally think its one of the main reason why many African countries are advancing slowly. Too much distrust among ethnic groups.

I have noticed that as well. I've been wondering how Botswana seems to do well with barely any ethnic conflict.
