The whole South was making money independently in the 90s out of necessity because the major labels weren't trying to sign Southern rappers and radio wasn't playing their shyt. Also a state like Texas is large enough that you could become a multi millionaire out the trunk without ever leaving the state. By the time Swishahouse nikkas were getting signed in 2004 all them nikkas were already millionaires

Master P turned down a million dollar advance from Universal while independent. Uncle Luke was making hand over fist millions independently

There's a reason Nipsey says "We the No Limit of the West nikka"
u cant forget.. southwest was the connect for texas ...

boys was gettin fronted work... n never payin back its was 900000 labels in texas 97-02

u goto kappa beach around that time u comin back with 900000000000000000000 cds n flyers...

all southwest..

none of lasted either.....

boys would rather used sw for sell out the trunk.. vs gettin the deal where they (sw) was putting them in stores like wherehouse sam good circuit n shyt... get that over time money...

Yea you right. I left the south out of my post trying to keep it brief but yea the Southside definitely had the first major looks in the late 90s

Kappa was before my time:wow:

99 I was in middle school in Killeen but even there nikkas was starched up and had Screw in the Walkmans on the bus:wow: that's how I found out about Screw in the first place:wow:

I said it too many times. To be in Houston from 91-98 was special especially on the South Side of town @shopthatwrecks knows what I'm talking about. The man had the entire city in a chokehold. Music simply wasn't listened to unless it was Screw.
If you was waiting in line outside of Park Place and Telephone Rd at 7pm on Friday nights reading the handwritten list of new tapes then you know what I'm talking about.
I was in high school (Sterling) at the time and before Screw really blew up it was no problem going to his house after school giving him a tracklist of what you wanted and he would make your own personal tape. shyt was like $20 for a personal but the way the man blew up from really just being some shyt we did after school with a hood DJ, to taking over the sound of music was crazy to witness. Even after he blew up the man always spoke (most people had no idea what he looked like for years) when he was out and about. Truly a humble person and never let fame get to his head.
I used to leave school during lunch (at Sterling) to buy a tape. Back when he had the brown hoop (think it was a cutlass). Sometimes he wouldn’t be there but you could buy a tape from his girl. When he started getting big is when he started having specific times he would open up.

Maaan The Kappa was so damn legendary and we had so many great memories from that shyt over the years. I think I still have footage from back in 96-99 of them days.

See now that I think about it we use to leave school during lunch and auto mechanic class (Mr. Russey was cool as shyt) to get food (Burger Park, Jack N The Crack on Bellfort them tacos use to hit, or Timmy Chan (original one) , grab Jordans from Almeda (back then Jordans dropped on weekdays) and then come back after. Some of us did go and get music but I never really knew what kind of music it was. I thought they was going to Soundwaves or some shyt. The whole time they were grabbing Screw tapes and not really saying anything. I stayed in Pearl Homes and had friends off of Telephone and Bellfort that eventually put me on and told me about who and what Screw was. My homeboy Marcell was the one who gave me about 2-3 of his personal tapes to listen to over the weekend.....after that it was over for me. I was stuck.

i gotta do more research on Screw. I heard he was from Hoova, a gang in LA and his moms sent him to TX to get out of trouble. A LEGEND nonetheless

Hahaaa. Some used to leave and go to Harlan’s to get food for coach mills. Those were the days…I lived in Crestmont. First time I heard screw, was waiting on the 89 to come and heard someone playing that tape with spice 1 freestyling at screw’s house. I think it was a gulf meadows screw tape.

:ohhh:Oh shyt Coach Mills.. I actually saw him in Pearland a few years ago and he immediately knew who I was. He was always cool as shyt and still looks damn near the same. Going to Thomas and Sterling Screw was everywhere.
