dj quik always gets the dr. dre "jr" treatment, but where does he really rank among dre, rza, premo?

Are you talking specifically about Quik and G-funk ?

Or the whole west coast which includes Muggs, Madlib, Alchemist, E-Swift, Architect, D-styles etc. etc. just for starters ?
Had no idea Alchemist is a west coast producer
Quk has reached a point with folks who try to be counter culture and too cool for school by placing him among all time greats. He had his chance to get there but he didn't (for w/e reason). Anyone trying to place him there is forcing it.
Quik is all of NWA in one

Dr. Dre’s most impactful work is reinterpolations of classic funk music from 20 years prior played out by session players in world class studios, this combined with a penchant for perfectionism is Dr. Dre

Quik is the same but he also writes his own raps

This is different than music producers that are entirely self-contained making music on an MPC.

I should clarify. I meant G-Funk as a whole isn’t as gritty and is more smooth.

Didn’t mean to blanket statement the entire west coast.

What’s Quiks “Chronic” :jbhmm: “36Chambers”/“OB4QL”

"Safe and Sound".

Quikstrumentals.

Like a whole series of them. Show the world a side of hip hop they didn't even know exists and he'll finally have his own lane, his own rep and his own credit that he wants badly and deserves as well. The David Blake/DR thing really shortchanged him due to politics as his sound was all over those productions and mix but no credits.

Rap, as it stands, was and is too narrow for his talents. Dre as well hence the Planets project having potential but Quik could change the game in a minute as the whole world would listen to his compositions as they take you on a trip. Brand new genre and so many west coast greats would be out of retirement to pitch their own discs because the funk runs deep in the trenches.

Shame he has only one Instrumental album out (for "Trauma"), because he could make a killing off of doing LoFi/Jazz Hop beats/mixes

Ok I would really like to see a battle between Quik and Daz

That is interesting

Daz has classics but quality fell off a cliff when he started releasing an album every 6-7 months whereas Quik has remained consistent.

I’ll give Safe + Sound another burn but it’s just not really my style.

Ambitionz az a Ryder >>>> any Quik beat. I don’t think He makes hard beats. Only psuedo-r&b ish

I think you’d safely be in the minority comparing the Chronic or OB4CL with Safe + Sound …good album tho …but nikka please :francis:

Couple things hold this album back from being in the discussion:

1) Timing: Quik's previous album came out prior to The Chronic and Safe + Sound came out nearly 3 years after. The direction of what west coast music sounded like changed during that time to say the least
2) Label politics; he and Profile were on the outs after Safe + Sound was released. It's why they dropped one video ("Safe + Sound") and didn't promote "Summer Breeze" heavily (IMO they dropped the ball BIG TIME on this song)
3) The constant falling out/reconciling/falling out again with his crew, though this is something that has plagued him for pretty much his entire career. At we have some classic Quik production from 97-99 while everyone was on the same page.

4. The production isn’t as good as OB4CL (RZA) & Chronic (Dre) :francis:

The most strident Quik fan surely understands that this doesn’t belong anywhere near a conversation with those two albums and that’s no disrespect to Quik.. but there’s levels

"Safe and Sound".

This is a classic track, but isn’t hard on the same level as:

Murder Was the Case
High Powered
What would U do?
Lyrical Gamgbang
Puffin on Blunts/sippin on
Stranded on Death Row
Ambitionz az a Rydah
Natural born Killaz
Real MFin Gz
Alwayz into somethin’
Wut Would You Do (Eazy E)
nikka Wit a Gun
Serial Killa
Pump Pump
Dogg Pound Gangstas
One By One
Etc etc…

Not even close tbh…it sounds cartoonish compared to the above tracks.

Quiks catalogue (imo) lacks to me bc he doesn’t have many of these hard g-funk beats that I look to when I bump west coast ish.
