He says in this it's spontaneous in the studio, but it's organized cause he thinks it through. I know with the amount of time and resources he has he really can just vibe in the studio and spit it as the verse comes to him, but the whole thing like Clark Kent is saying here about him coming up with a whole new song in his head in 15 minutes on the spot is what I'm saying is a myth, which Jay has perpetuated, and there's really nothing wrong with that it's just another aspect of his legend and he has every right to let people run wild with it and even to fuel the fire, it's only made the perception that he's a genius even greater.

Gotta stop this revisionist history after people die... Jay has said RD was the last time he "wrote (pen & pad)"... which is painfully obvious considering his subseuent releases. Can I Live was one song where he's publicly stated he wrote the old fashioned way.
And there have been accounts from folks who said they both found out in the studio that neither "wrote" lyrics for the most part and were mutually impressed.
Then, when Biggie and Jay sat at the board, the engineer came and dropped a pad and a pen right in between them. Jay looks at it and then he pushes it over to Big. Big looks at it and pushes it back. That’s the time they realized that neither one of them wrote lyrics [down on paper]. It was something monumental. - Biggs
