Them Lo Lifes...
Jay said himself that he writes verses in his head and memorizes them by repetition. He said after having a certain of amount of verses he would have to put some down because he can only remember so many at a time. He never said that he makes up verses on the spot in his head. I think the legend has grown because you hear all theses stories of people being in awe of Jay because they see him hear a beat, bob his head, and put some shyt down. So maybe to them it seems like he is making the verse on the spot. But Jay actually never said that himself, in fact it was the opposite. So any misconception about the way he writes comes from others singing his praises , not him. All he basically brags about is not writing.
Jay actually said, he says the one line in his head, then then first and second and so on and so forth, which is just a discipline he's master as a Emcee.

Had me like :ohhh: thats how he does it!

Jay-Z Doesn't Write Down Lyrics | News Video | MTV

He says in this it's spontaneous in the studio, but it's organized cause he thinks it through. I know with the amount of time and resources he has he really can just vibe in the studio and spit it as the verse comes to him, but the whole thing like Clark Kent is saying here about him coming up with a whole new song in his head in 15 minutes on the spot is what I'm saying is a myth, which Jay has perpetuated, and there's really nothing wrong with that it's just another aspect of his legend and he has every right to let people run wild with it and even to fuel the fire, it's only made the perception that he's a genius even greater.

Everywhere...You never there.
Gotta stop this revisionist history after people die... Jay has said RD was the last time he "wrote (pen & pad)"... which is painfully obvious considering his subseuent releases. Can I Live was one song where he's publicly stated he wrote the old fashioned way.

And there have been accounts from folks who said they both found out in the studio that neither "wrote" lyrics for the most part and were mutually impressed.

Then, when Biggie and Jay sat at the board, the engineer came and dropped a pad and a pen right in between them. Jay looks at it and then he pushes it over to Big. Big looks at it and pushes it back. That’s the time they realized that neither one of them wrote lyrics [down on paper]. It was something monumental. - Biggs

Jay and Big recorded “Brooklyn’s Finest” in one session. Neither one of them wrote it down, they just went in and just kept going four bars for four bars. And that’s light work for them. That’s just what they do. -Preem

DJ Premier: Jay Z actually called me and recited the whole rhyme on the phone and gave me the concept of what he wanted it to be. So he already knew it was called “D’Evils.” He told me what the song was about. He did the whole verse on the phone and he even told me which scratches to use. So everything was pretty much already mapped out. He said, “I just need the track to sound like that atmosphere. I just need it to sound like the darkness of the lyrics.”

You think he really had 3 16s in his head like that? It's actually longer than 16 but that's neither here nor there.

Yet people are still desperate to paint Big as Jays teacher and nuthugger when it was a mutual relationship.
