Yep but we have to put this into context… the world and technology was very different. The charts & TV dominated everything.

These were young guys with often minimal education who had to make the music business work for them whilst they could.

Those corny commercial tunes allowed these artists to continue their careers ultimately. Wiley used those labels for their advances, knew how to make a Pop song if he had to and then went back to Grime.

It’s only recently UK genres have been allowed to be authentic and do numbers. Thats why however people feel about Central Cee/Dave I will champion them based off of that.
Grime opened that door too - when Skepta dropped Konnichiwa which charted at #2 and was nominated and won multiple awards (which he dropped independently), labels saw the shift and opened up the budgets for artists like Stormzy, etc…

These days most acts don’t even need a major behind them and still dominate the charts - see Dave, Central Cee, Digga D

Dame saw the vision :dame:

Skepta is the person I credit for opening the last doors to what we have now. Konnichiwa and working with Rocky allowed others to make authentic non pop music.

He helped bridged the gap between here and America/Europe in a non forced way and made people pay more attention.
