I tried it with my nephews a few times, but I could never get into it.

My guess is a lot of people look at the cartoon aesthetic and brush it off.
That, and a lot of people were turned off by the building and don't care to give the no build mode a fair shot.
To each their own opinions but it surprises me when a fan of shooters and more so third person shooters, doesn't bother trying fortnite.
It's one of the most polished experiences in gaming and for a free game it's better than pretty much every other shooter (at least on consoles) specifically in terms of functionality and consistent significant updates. We have people out here everyday paying $70 for broken games.
The graphics, performance, and gameplay of Fortnite is top tier while most other devs are consistently trying to patch themselves out of a hole.

The building portion wasn't for me.
Cats out here building apartment buildings in the middle of a shootout was crazy to me.
I'll give it another go eventually.
