With this and Terry about to enter The New 52 (), I thought it would be fitting to have a discussion on Batman Beyond.
What did you all think of this show? I think it's one of DCAU's most underrated series. It was based off of a rather original idea. The first episode starts with an old Bruce Wayne still operating in the future as Batman until his health fails him. He had fought psychopaths, metahumans, and even Gods', but who would think the tale of the original Batman would end when he was stopping a kidnap/murder attempt.
20 years later, a young, punk kid named Terry McGinnis stumbles upon the Wayne mansion
And we're off to the races. Batman is back. This one had Spiderman's sense of humor and more of a dirty fighter. He also had more gadgets than the original Batman had. Bruce Timm didn't want to go with Riddler Beyond or Two Face beyond so we were introduced to a lot of new villains (many had Marvel influences). Still, old Bat-villains did return in the form of Bane, Mr. Freeze, and Ra's and Talia Al Ghul. Oh yeah, did I mention it's DTDVD movie had The Joker in it? It's the only DCAU movie to match and maybe even pass Mask of the Phantasm. The Justice League also had their own two part episode featuring Superman.
Through out the series we learned Bruce and (now Commissioner) Barbara Gordon had a relationship, Batman and Talia stopped the unseen Apocalypse of 09, and something caused Bruce to leave the Justice League. Characters like Alfred and Jim are gone, Nightwing is gone, and Tim Drake is also gone () and the only companion that Bruce has left is a dog named Ace.
It was a great show. Many great single episodes and this was probably the darkest that the DCAU ever got. If I could recommend any to you who haven't seen it, it's all on Netflix, I would recommend:
Rebirth (Part 1 & 2)
Meltdown
Eyewitness
Splicers
Shriek
Out of Past
Terry's Friend Dates a Robot
Countdown
Rats
Hooked Up
Speak No Evil
Any episode featuring the villain Inque (Black Out, Disappearing Inque, Inqueling)
Any episode featuring The Royal Flush Gang (Dead Man's Hand, Once Burned, King's Ransom)
Ascension
The Call (Part 1 & 2)
Ace in the Hole
And last but not least, my favorite JLU episode - Epilogue. Yes, it's a JLU episode, but it's almost all about Batman Beyond and it's a final goodbye to the series and all of the characters we grew up with and introduced to. We also learn some shocking revelations in that episode that were actually hinted at through out the series:
Thoughts? Comments? Retrospectives? What did you all think of this series?
