And they wouldn't have had to go deep as often to get into field goal range. It hurt a lot since the potential game winner was short.

It's going to take 10+ seconds to get to the line and run a play. Just take the TO. The next play should be down the middle to get into FG range. You complete that you can take the last TO, run a quick pass for more yards, get out of bounds, and kick the FG.

That makes no sense because the objective is to give yourself more attempts to not only get in range but to have 2 more plays to get even closer. What you're suggesting puts it all on one play.
The ball could've been tipped, dropped, or your QB could've been sacked. Taking a TO covers you in case you don't get a completion.
What's even more egregious is you're not relying on your kicker but a back up. You should be trying to get him a 45 yarder or less.
