It was more that he is too busy on inside jokes and enjoyment of the process to put together something compelling. I liked Red State okay but his explanation of the ending with all the special effects being one option and the actual ending being the other I was thinking: so he just randomly zigs or zags. He didn't really have something to say.

I wish he'd just try to aim for Netflix with something, and build that cache up again. His recent record is TRASH, I can understand why he can't get a good film gig.
My choice: Francis Ford Copolla. Granted dude made 4 perfect movies in a row: Godfather, The Conversation, Godfather II, Apocalypse Now. But after that...

Francis Ford Coppola had the worst fall off ever but he also OWNED the 1970s so it doesn't really matter what he put out after 1979...he's got 4 classics in a 7 year period. No one else has that, not even close.

It hurts with Kevin because he's still a good writer but it just seems like you said he's too worried about inside jokes. I liked Clerks 2 a lot I'm hoping Clerks 3 is dope
Tusk was actually a fun B movie...it was stupid as fukk, but it felt like a 1980s movie where everyone was having fun and it was never boring
And Clerks 2 is severely underrated
See I can't speak for Tusk because I still haven't seen it although I want to. I was more so speaking for Red State and a lot of the stuff he did in between Clerks 2 and Tusk which would be the porno flick, cop out, etc. Clerks 2 is very dope. And he had something to say so you could tell his passion was there. If Clerks 3 is just as good as that one, I'm good
Zach and Miri was funny as fukk and I still don't know why people didn't like it. Cop Out was a director for Hire job, so I don't count it for Smith and Red State was a clusterfukk.
