are any of the non-BIG publishing rights (which I believe the estate had most of it anyways) valuable in 2023?

big difference between PUBLISHING and MASTERS

guess which one makes more money

Publishing is worth more than masters.

You could own a hard copy of the master and it would be worthless to you.
Incomparison to publishing.

You can't even market or build value for the master for sell.
without publishing first legally In General.

Publishing is paid every time that one record is played with advertising dollars .

piblishing on one hit in the first year is worth 70 -140 million Alone.

Masters on a record are only indicative of sales[digital, physical etc.]

which would never be capable because publishing would be how the selection was marketed to the public.

both are very valuable. Even if you own the publishing, no one can sample the ORIGINAL RECORDING without the permission of the master recording owner. So for example, I own a label with the masters and you are the rapper. Someone wants to sample your song. You have control over that, but they got to pay you AND me as the master recording owner. If they don't want to pay me, they can go the route of interpolation and just pay you while cutting me (the master recording owner) out. So technically you're correct, but without ownership of the master recording, the publishing owner can't release a greatest hits compilation of the ORIGINAL recordings. They'd just have to re-record all of their music, as we've seen with artists like Taylor Swift.

I’m sure many people (including me) continue to stream music from the golden era of hip hop and rnb. I have a badboy playlist on spotify that I play at least once a week. Hopefully they get to eat off this in a real way.
