Did this cac overstep by calling me "brotha"?

I'm out doing errands and hold the door open for the person behind me who happens to be a cac.

He had the fukn nerve to say "thanks brotha "

I said, "what did you call me???? "

He starts to stutter and said "I s-said thanks "

I hit him with "yea, I thought so " And walked away. My girl was with me too and she told me she feels embarrassed to be around me sometimes and hasn't talked to me since.

Now I'm sittin at home feelin quite a bit ashamed

Did this rude cac overstep?

ive noticed a lot of white guys just say it hulk hogan style* but there are some nasty ones. i guess you gotta analyze it in the moment

i hear it a lot when i go to the gas station. or when some homeless dude bums a cigarette. 'thanks brother'

im not black (not a cac either) so its just my 2 cents. my head is on a swivel enough as it is so i can only imagine how yall feel. personally i dont use that word very often, i say 'man' usually. like, 'hey thanks man' for holding the door and etc.

Its happened to me a few times and i just put it on ignorance and poor social cues . Just a clumsy way of "being down".

Typically , when a white dude is being hostile or passive aggressive they don't use brotha, its normally "buddy" or "pal" or "skippy".
