Did the Matt Hardy version 1.0 gimmick have potential?

I think it's more WWE was dead set on making Edge a star. I was shocked when Edge went over at Summerslam. Matt only got one win in that feud I believe. Damn shame. People may not remember but Matt was over as fukk during that time. I thought it made no sense to have Edge go over but he did and obv he eventually made the most of it. But I think Edge could have lost that feud and still got his way to the top...he was already the heel.

Yeah exactly. Most people will naturally sympathize with someone getting fukked over by their friend and girlfriend.
But they clearly didn't want to air dirty laundry online while Matt was all too happy to do it. Looked like a crazy emotional 15 year old, and by the end you actually felt bad for Edge/Lita.

Thats one thing i can never take away from dude. His themes are almost always piff. Somehow though the MVP feud was when i was most into him as a serious singles guy.

The feud was good "comeback" program, but somehow, MVP with got the upper hand overall.

Matt's biggest problem was that he could not keep the personal separate from the professional.
Yeah, Lita cheated on him with a then-married Edge. But Matt killed any sympathy Vince and the rest of the higher-ups had for him by being an online attention whore. That whole affair stuff should have been handled PRIVATELY offline.
If Matt would have focused on using that fake ass hurt to elevate himself as a performer, instead of using it to seek out some petty ass revenge that exposed him as a jealous hypocrie, think he still would've been under contract with the WWE.

He killed a lot of his momentum with that whiny ass promo. Then Edge came back with one of his best promos of his career. Then it went downhill from there.

Despite how bad Matt shyt the bed on this, the build up with the whole shoot style beat downs and Matt acting like he legit snuck in the building were really well done.

The V1 gimmick was entertaining for the time.

it was good, i think it earned him a lot more fans too since the stigma of "jeff is the star" existed since they were a team when jeff had the crazy color hair and was pulling off all his stunts

i still think even post v1, when he returned as a face during the whole edge thing, if he had more people behind him in the office he could have ended up a upper midcarder and stayed in that spot. fans were really behind him when he was randomly showing up attacking edge and all that shyt, dude was getting chants and pops for just being the guy who was wronged by his girl and homie. whole story was really made for him to become a star not edge, but what happened happened and here we are

Nah now we're just rewriting history. Matt was never going to be more than what he was. Fans were with him up until he lost the crowd during that random in-ring promo where he went on blabbing about the situation whilst flipping between Lita and Edge's real names and stage names and crying in the ring. shyt was a mess and he left everyone legit bemused then Edge killed him in his promo the following week and went straight for his manhood. The further it went the more Matt just came off whiny rather than a fiery babyface looking to right a wrong. His delivery was all wrong whether its because he actually was going through the most or what he came off as the least cool person in that situation. By the time Summerslam rolled around the crowd was amused by Edge murdering him in that match . The only person who had any heat left after that was Lita she was getting ridiculous boos. Matt was a soppy wet blanket that cooled himself and Edge off badly.

Conventional morality may have called for Matt winning the feud but he didn't carry his part of the equation. He just wasn't it. That feud showed exactly why their careers were going in the trajectories they were going in. If it went on any longer the crowd would have turned Edge babyface. They had to keep Lita with Edge as a heater because the crowd didn't even really want to boo Edge like that anymore. Edge should have found a guy on the roster with charisma and fukked their chick instead.
