Budden didn't know how to make good rap music, I'm sorry

He had bars but couldn't structure a song or an album. Everyone talks about Mood Muzik 2 but it's all unmixed, unstructured material. It's a mess of a listen even though the content was interesting - Royce's Death Is Certain is a better example of how to make that album

You see a guy like Ransom who loves rapping and gets better with age and adapts his subject matter and music to his age bracket

Joe's a great entertainer and much better suited to his current career than his former one IMO

No, you're simply moving the goal post because you know your comparison was terrible. "Blowing up" is commercial success, as that also can happen without respect. What we know about both these men in 2010 or 2015 has nothing to do with whether or not they blow up in 2003 for Joe or 2005 for Game. If Joe had to run run that Game had for 10 years we would not be asking this question. This is my last original response to you before repeating this until you let it go.

It's probably a combination of things. Joey for sure has shown after he left Def Jam that he knows how to sabotage any situation. He also wasn't willing to "play the game" the way a major label in 2002-2005 probably would have expected him to.

At the same time, Def Jam obviously didn't know what to do with a lot of rap artists during Hov's era as CEO. (And a bit before/after Hov's time as a CEO). And Budden for better and worse has always been a weirdo so he's not the easiest artist to push in to stardom.

There probably were things that always were just done a certain way and Joe couldn't accept it because it didn't make sense to him, but him being a stubborn a$$hole didn't help.

Someone can fact check me, but I'm pretty sure Joe was hosting a radio show back then but Def Jam didn't think it was a good idea which in hindsight with podcasts being huge sounds crazy. People mentioned the Pump It Up/soundtrack thing, that's just poor management by whoever was responsible.

As for the Drake comparison, people used to talk about their similarities around 08-10 before Take Care dropped. Budden and Phonte were the names that always came up when people were talking about Drake.

Drake's rapping style (or his writers more likely) changed and Drake reached different heights and changed his whole shyt. But a handful of songs on Thank Me Later sounded like watered down, more mainstream Budden songs. Worse punchlines and wordplay and more singing but still. I'm sure there are other examples in Drake's earlier work.

That being said, obviously Drake is/was more marketable and was more willing to explore different sounds, ideas and trends. Budden was never gonna be what Drake is, his style was what Drake was for a short period of time and then he never went back to it.

At least Budden used his deal/situation and was able to build a smaller but loyal fanbase/following and was more successful than a lot of other so called one hit wonders, but at the same time someone else with his situation probably could have done a lot more.

Naw you just want an argument. Success in rap is measured 2 ways. Income and legacy.

Both of them have done well financially. Neither has the respect admiration that mirrors their talent.

The most respected artists in hip hop didn’t earn that title because of sales. We give flowers to those that embody hip hop, not commercial success.

Sales ≠ successful career in rap.
