I can get some this weekend...:leon: It's kinda hard to capture in photos though, take it from a resident, the improvements are all in motion and the little things. More people walking the streets, more festivals within the city limits and events, more cultural events. Small cafes and bars popping up...if you arent from there it would seem like it was always like this, but take it from me....it CANNOT get worse than what it was in the early to mid 2000's socially. That was the onset of black flight on top of the white flight.

Just read about having hipsters come there a few months ago. Don't remember where or the article but essentially said what you did.

But honestly we prayed this wouldn't happen but it was truly inevitable. You just CANNOT sustain a city made for 2 million plus with a little over 700k it just doesn't add up. Inept governing and corruption added to an already very serious issue not to mention the fact that socially majority of the state was on a "fukk Detroit" binge for the latter half of the 20th century. If there are any "saviors" of the city it will be Dan Gilbert, the Illich Family and a coalition of black/arab small business owners and strangely "hipsters". People complained about what they did to Bed-Stuy and Williamsburgh in NYC but Detroit would LOVE that sort of revitalization.

@Type Username Here yeah its strange because so many young, white recent college graduates and students seem to sort of fetishize Detroit. But its hard to say if its authentic or not. The GOOD part about all this is 3 fold.

1. The introduction of new ideas: Different people think in different ways, the more people the better. And some of these kids are some real outside the box ass people...thus bringing some outside the box ideas on revitalization, small business and art.

2. Rebirth of the Neighborhoods: Detroit isn't like NYC, Chicago, LA or any other big city in the sense that we really don't have the communal "neighborhoods" like those cities. I remember being in NYC and seeing the difference between Bedstuy, Red Hook, and other places. Chicago the same, from Wicker Park to Hyde Park to the Gold Coast ect. Detroiters never really did that, we repped streets (Schoolcraft, 7 Mile, Dexter, 4-1 ect.) The cats are bringing back some of those communities that can self sustain. In Detroit its nothing to have to drive 5-10 mins to go to the grocery store or to do any reasonable shopping, never was a big deal because there was no public transport and we all have cars. But it killed the autonomy of hoods, the ability to shop, eat, lounge, and do everything in walking distance. That is coming back in some areas.

3. Making Detroit "cool" again: It was fun to shyt on Detroit since about the 60's but now, its like kicking a dog when its down. People now want to see the city comeback and the exploding arts and music scene are really happening. Everyone thinks that its going to be Rap but its really not. With acts like Dale Earnhart Jr Jr. and Passalasqua and these alt, indie acts people are coming to places like the Majestic, the Magic Stick and other venues to see Rock and alt. people of ALL races.

I agree with the bold.. it's an atmosphere.. the environment has hipster white girls dying to move to mid town n shyt...

And yeah, I guess it was inevitable... I just hope hundreds of thousands of black people are also able to benefit.

I'm with you there, i work in Midtown and go to Wayne as well and lemme tell you. Its the most gorgeous blend of people down there now...if there's a place im really proud of its down there. But many of the projects down there have alot of black hands in them, they just aren't indicative of the average. Dally in the Alley is perhaps my favorite festival of the summer along with DEMF, two festivals where mostly black folks don't mess with but also two festivals that have virtually NO incidents ever. It's sad to say.

However, my biggest issue is i hope that this doesn't KILL some of the small biz and ideas coming up. We still have a VERY serious racial and class divide to make up, 8 Mile is STILL a MAJOR ideological border.

But i feel thats mostly baby boomers who don't fukk with the city at this point. I think the more people fukk with Detroit the more we will see it improve.

yeah thats whats gonna happen. they takin over. now when it comes to the residential areas i dont know whats going to happen. im glad orr just made the tough decision everybody knew we had to make. the problem with the past people is nobody wanted to admit it so they let it keep piling so they wouldnt look like the bad guy

bottom line is the hardworking men and women about to get screwed but that is the only way the city is coming back. its gonna be a tough road but the city will be back, somebody just had to be willing to bite the bullet, take the blame and be the bad guy

the little ive heard from them i've messed with

Well, I also miss some of the black events and festivals that they are slowly taking away because some of those were cultural. Pretty soon we will have no Afro Caribbean, African, even the Jazz festival and other food ones won't be the same. I'm not gonna pretend like the fireworks wasn't good without all the ******ishness though.

The only good thing is that these new young mid town whites aren't focused on that race shyt as much as the average white person. They worry about festival shyt, hipster bars, riding bicycles n shyt.

I don't think it will kill the small businesses and local entrepreneurship... the business side is one of the main entities pushing the gov and others to go bankrupt, move the project blacks far away from downtown, and to reshape the identity of Detroit. If there was ever a time to set up shop, it's right now.

I hate everything about 8 mile.. on one side you see everything wrong w black america and you have the deadliest neighborhoods in America, on the other side you have whites who hate black people more than whites in Mississippi and who blame blacks for the overall failing economy of MI. Plus the eastpointe and other east sub police target black people like it's the 30's.

how do you think the freedom place apts fit into all this shyt? ? its right across the street from wayne and ghetto as fukk, lol, it seems weird for them to leave that there. I guess it's just too many blacks to move at once.

Interesting to see the federal government continue to deal with other things rather than focus on infrastructure and corruption inside the system. Better to turn a blind eye.. :to: I doubt this gets the serious sustained coverage it should. Hopefully this should start to open the door for a grassroots revival, as long as property prices stay good for it.. :yeshrug: People will carry on. Its definitely a rough spot for the city tho.

thank liberalism.

Detroit was once a beacon for liberalism, only a matter of time before it crashed and burned. Liberalism always does, couple that with the white flight and it was really going down the way of the dinosaur...
