Do strikes, get bonuses. Unlock all the subclasses so you can modify your build.
This game is massive might as well unlock everything and start experimenting.

Start with the New Light Campaign. If you NEW new, it should automatically load up, if not go to the kiosk at the tower/helm to pick it up.
4 elemental subclasses to know 3 light (Arc, Solar and Void) and 1 dark (statis) and the elements basically have different effects on enemies.
Pick up bounties from the tower vendors and planetary vendors for extra XP and to get the hang of things, you might want to do public events at the Cosmodrome.
Play through the campaigns (Shadowkeep, Beyond Light & Witch Queen) to get the story and why certain characters matter.
and do Strikes/Gambit/Crucible to get the hang of things and clique up with people you play with

Ehh. I'd say it's more about Arbalest being nearly mandatory in any endgame content with Match Game and barrier champions.
Even then, it's still going to break champion barriers in on shot, so it's not the end of the world. Really, the problem is that that Match Game, champions, and endgame PvE content as a whole really needs a serious retool. But if I remember correctly, the Guardian Games Training playlist is just a 1550 level nightfall with matchmaking and less restrictive modifiers, so maybe the change is on the way.
