Warlock is still my favorite, Hunter in second.
Can I still have fun with just the base game? Or do I need to boss up? 
I've had a blast with the base game but the new DLC completely destroys the base game.Can I still have fun with just the base game? Or do I need to boss up?
It's night and day. Definitely try out the base game and if you even remotely like it the DLC should be an instant cop.
So, I can just cop Destiny (vanilla) and Forsaken?
If you want to play the Forsaken DLC and everything else coming after it you need to have:
Destiny 2 (Base Game)
Expansion 1: Curse of Osiris
Expansion 2: War Mind
Forsaken
Annual Pass
I put a price break down in the OP of this thread.
They opened the floodgates on a bunch of stuff today from what it seems. My team was able to get the boss to summon, but we lost the match
I look forward to being able to do the Shattered Throne in roughly 2021 when I get my light level up. Final boss in that shyt is apparently 590, and I grinded it out with an alt last week to get my Hunter and Warlock up to 525

EDIT: Apparently one of the quest steps is to do a 580 light 6 man max version of The Corrupted strike............this is going to take me a while.

The Malfeaseance strike is rated @ 580 light, but you can have another fireteam of 3 join yours once you start the mission. Took my team of 6 ranging 552-568 about 20 minutes to knock out. Now back to that Gambit grind.

What are you doing to find the higher level items?
I'm finding that the PVP modes are giving the best items on a more consistent basis.
Strikes have had a low return rate for me.
Once you hit 540, only certain challenges give you +5 or greater powerful rewards, so you'll want to do all the of the Dreaming City challenges first after reset. After you do all of the dreaming city stuff, then you do the nightfall, particularly the "get > 100k" challenge. Then you'll want to do all of the weekly stuff(crucible, strikes, Ikora, Flashpoint) these will grant you +1 powerful gear. You don't really have to do dailies any more, but if you do only do them to get gear that closes the gap on all of your stuff to make sure their all within 1-4 power of each other. Ranking up Crucible and Gambit gives powerful rewards too.
Your power spikes from the Dreaming City and raid. I just ran the raid up to Riven and I went from the 560 I posted last night to 572 as of this post.
