That'll vary from person to person breh.
I wasn't keeping track but I'd say it took me 30 hours or so on my main character. Level progression is pretty steady in this game. If you're going for speed, beat the campaign and make sure you do your weekly milestones.
Alternate characters level up much faster since you can send them all of your high level weapons and boost their stats substantially.

He hasn't bought the game yet, and we've already beaten the raid. (In other comments I told him roughly how many hours it would take to catch up as well.)
He said he wanted to join the clan as well. Everything is covered in the OP.
