Why does he NEED to watch these movies?

Seems odd to be an actor and not a fan of films.

I don't know too many people that worked in an industry for 40 years but don't really know anything about it.

like having a nurse who has never gotten a doctors checkup,

or a mechanic who has never driven a car. I guess you can still be good at your job without the other, but seems very unlikely. I would assume both were lying if they told me that. And that what i assume Denzel was doing here too. lying

he doesn't even have to be a fan of films, i would assume that at the very least, he would research a director who offered him a role in something he was considering, and maybe check out some of their work to be sure he is a good fit.

It make sense what he is saying, I think he's seen Kubrick's films but it's not the first time I have heard a great in a particular field claim not to have extensive knowledge, they seem to only consume content that will enhance their ability.
