CHICAGO — U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh told a crowd at a recent town hall meeting that the Democratic Party's "game" is to make Latinos dependent on government just like "they got African-Americans dependent upon government."

The tea party-backed Republican, who has a reputation for eyebrow-raising comments and is up for re-election this year, also said that the Rev. Jesse Jackson would be out of work if blacks "weren't so dependent upon government."

In response, Tammy Duckworth, the Democrat running against Walsh in a newly drawn suburban Chicago congressional district, called the first-term congressman's remarks offensive and irresponsible. Jackson added that the comments were meant to "incite and polarize."

Walsh's remarks, which he made Saturday, also circulated on several political websites and drew thousands of comments.Walsh has made a number of contentious comments since winning an upset victory in his suburban Chicago district in 2010 as part of a Republican surge in Illinois. His video lecture of President Barack Obama for spending like "a drunken sailor" helped make him a rising tea-party star.

But he faces a tough re-election fight against Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran, in a diverse district redrawn by Democrats last year to favor their party. More than 12 percent of the people living in Illinois' 8th Congressional District are Asian and 22 percent are Hispanic.

His latest statements were videotaped by an anti-tea party group at one of Walsh's regular town hall meetings. The video shows the congressman appearing to get agitated as he shouts about all the people who "want handouts" and the Democrats' plan to create even more government dependency.

"That's their game," he told an audience of a few dozen before making the remarks about blacks, Hispanics and Jackson.

On Thursday, Jackson told The Associated Press that Walsh's comments were nothing more than a political tactic designed to "incite and polarize." Jackson said his life's work has been to "gain for all vulnerable Americans equal protection under the law."

Further, he said, Walsh ignores the fact that the majority of people receiving government aid are not black and that the congressman is demonstrating a bias against the poor in favor of the wealthy.

"For the rich, it's called a subsidy. For the poor, it is welfare," Jackson said.Duckworth suggested in a statement that Walsh's comments were the latest in a growing list of racially insensitive statements.

"Congressman Walsh's remarks are not only offensive, they are especially irresponsible coming from a sitting member of Congress," she said.

It's very sad and very true. Some say that this is nothing but one mere subsidiary objective of the democrats' grand plan to fortify an automatic voting block, but I'd say that it's nothing more than good intentions gone wrong.

Damn shame. The reason it seems like alot of black are on welfare is becuz we're a small portion of the U.S. Population. There are just as many whites depending on govt. asst. just like black folk. This dumbazz comments is why blacks dont vote Republican.:pacspit:

White folks realized beating us upside the head made us stronger, so they catered to our most primal desires and turned many of us into bytches. Its so demonic.

His comments are a pretty good example of the actual reason blacks don't vote for Republicans.

Exactly. Black people would probably be Republicans if it wasn't for guys like him.

How is he a congressman anyway? He owed 100,000 dollars at one time in child support.

:wtf:

The current salary (2011-2012) for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year.

Members are free to turn down pay increase and some choose to do so. :laff:

The median personal wealth for members of Congress grew to $911,510 in 2009, up from $785,515 in 2008, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Nearly half of the members of Congress are millionaires.

This. People's knee-jerk reaction is to cry RACISM but in reality Rep Walsh's statements have alot of truth to them. If you compare the black pyche in the early 1900's to where we are now, i would say we have regressed substantially. We essentially went from a mindset of "we shall overcome" to a subservient, government dependent one. I mean, can you imagine we used to have numerous black senators, a black wall street, as well as numerous black run institutions of higher learning. [sarcasm] But thank God for integration, because now we no longer need to support our black institutions. [/sarcasm]

Hell, there was a time when black college and professional athletics were considered the premier sporting events in the US among many sports fans. Now its basically a running joke in the athletic world. Its truly demonic friends.

although this guy is a non child support paying douche, he is correct in his assessment of Jesse Jackson.

Jesse Jackson is not very popular amongst educated african americans. He never marches for the betterment of schools or reformation of laws that disproportinately target african americans..nope he marches when he can capitalize on the the racial divide and that always seems to affect the uneducated and indigent of our people.

That is demonic!

Its percentages breh. Percentages.

Blacks make up 12% of the population yet collect nearly 40% of the welfare dollars. Whites far outnumber blacks yet collect just under 50% of the welfare dollars. In absolute numbers there are more whites collecting welfare, but the percentage of blacks collecting welfare is disproportionate to the population percentages.

We've become a dependent people breh.
