Del Rio was over until this happened. This plus the move to Raw and letting him finally get the title when the Punk storyline became a clusterfukk is what killed his career.
Outside of a title run it's tough for a lot of these guys to stay relevant. Cody, Miz, Del Rio, Swagger all struggled when you take the strap off them. Del Rio and Swagger now that I think about it struggled when they was champs too
The only two that still stay relevant without a title is Ziggler and

Plus, having him on the live show where they couldn't edit in the "reactions" he was getting on Fridays.Edge is a convenient excuse because people like to hate him. Del Rio has a tailor-made for heat gimmick...has a heat magnet announcer...has a special entrance every week...has had multiple title reigns (with the A-Show belt) since. At some point you have to start looking at him.

the wwe has not done anything with his character.
that makes plausible sense given what the character is supposed to be.
