I think the problem is the people who want it to happen are too..."laid back" while the evil b*stards who want it to stay how it's been are more the "go getter" types.

if humans have developed this level of intelligence that already puts us so far 'above' the other animals, is it hard to imagine our intelligence could continue to evolve further? and a lot of what we've done with that intelligence has been about improving our 'comfort level'
my original question was based on this plot device that would just make it happen. we may be able to do it now, but it would take great effort. what if we developed automated technology that basically just did it all. you push the button on the magic box, and "bang", everyone's taken care of (edit: "taken care of" as in clothing/food/shelter/xbox. not blown to bits). it just raised the question, "wtf would people do?" explore the universe I guess

It does almost force you to think of a "meaning of life" though. Right now "survival" is that meaning for most...if that could change what would take it's place?
