dude do you always have to interject some unfounded political nonsense in everything? no borders, barriers, and restrictions are things most liberals support. if anything 3d printing is a liberal's dream. 3rd world countries and local designers, artisans, and other creative types would gain the most from this as well as the environment. while some big businesses would lose the most.

Liberals want to "protect jobs' with trade barriers and Tariffs. Liberals want products to be made by unionized workforces, which a 3d printer will eviscerate.

Liberals want products to be made by regulatory standards. How are you going to control something like this? Random inspections on every house?

This guy is making a gun. Liberals want guns to be controlled.

What if I use a 3d printer to make and sell my own products out of my house? oh uh.. Now we will get all "progressive i.e. liberal agencies" going to my property and getting in my business... OSHA, EPA, the city (business license), FDA, ATF, and health inspector. Why? because now my house is a manufacturing plant. Oh is my house ZONED to be a manufacturing plant? That's another bullshyt liberal control device--the zoning law.

You know what liberal is? The prick in the Ghostbusters movie that turned of the Reactor--that's a liberal to the T. And that prick wants his nose in everyone's business because knows what's best for us.

of course no group in society would like all the aspects of new technology.

everyone who's adversely effected by international trade seeks protection from the government even the so called conservative capitalist. U.S companies spend millions lobbying to enact or drop various tariffs and other trade barriers that effect their bottom line, but they'll have people like you thinking it's only the unions.

Liberals want workers rights and fair wages, unions fight for those things. 3D printing would shift most economies from manufacturing to knowledge based and since most knowledge based jobs tend to pay better and have more workers rights, 3D printing would just accomplish something liberals wanted to do but without the unions.

:what:everyone want things made by regulatory standards. who don't want things to be made by standards that would prevent someone from being electrocuted by turning on a tv or a faulty appliance causing a house fire. and besides 3D printing would personalize the manufacturing process so most likely people would choose safe blueprints anyway.
3D printing would be the biggest thing for environmentalally friendly manufacturing cause instead of monitoring and regulating millions of different businesses and the way they handle byproducts you'll just have to regulate the way printer manufacturer's handle harmful by-products and since most 3D printing would be home based noone would want harmful chemicals emitting in their home so they'll have to do that anyway.

everyone wants guns to be controlled but at different levels, even the nra. who actually would like any random crazy or some gang bangers having the ability to print the latest weapons and explosive systems.

Where did I say it was only the unions? Any company is going to want protection if it benefits them. Liberals want protections because of the unions.

Liberals want workers rights and fair wages, unions fight for those things. 3D printing would shift most economies from manufacturing to knowledge based and since most knowledge based jobs tend to pay better and have more workers rights, 3D printing would just accomplish something liberals wanted to do but without the unions.

I doubt it. We live in a knowledge based society as is, and high paying jobs and wealth have been concentrated into the hands of the smart.

Regulatory standards aren't necessary for products to be safe. Brand names and/or reputation are much more powerful than you think.

Some environmental consequence that we aren't thinking of or can't foresee will arise.

The problem is: Every gangbanger already has a gun. Gangbangers in England, where guns are illegal, have guns.

Control doesn't stop them from having guns. Control disarms the civilized and enables the savage.

In the Silver Lining
We have a 3d printer over here. They are amazing technosorcery. One day, we may live in a printed house. Hopefully not because it will cost a lot of people their jobs. So demonic people are already trying to print death.

Yall ain't know about the Chinese dude trying to create the tallest building in the world in like 90 days. The same guy that built a 30 story Chinese hotel in like 15 days....

30-Story Building Built In 15 Days (Time Lapse)

A Chinese construction company is planning to build the world’s largest skyscraper – and it’ll race against the clock to do it.

Broad Sustainable Building wants to construct a 2,749 feet-tall building, dubbed “Sky City,” over a period of just 90 days in Changsha in Hunan province, China.

It took Dubai over five years to build the current record-holder, the Burj Khalifi, which stands at a whopping 2,722 feet.

Workers will complete five stories a day to build the soaring tower, which will be able to house 31,400 people,
the company’s senior vice president told Construction Week Online.

Work on the Sky City’s foundation is expected to kick off next month. But the actual 90-day challenge won’t begin until the start of 2013.

The company’s plans for the 220-story building, of course, have been met with a great deal of skepticism.

Broad is known for its ability to build at a breakneck speed. It put up a 15-story hotel in just 48 hours back in 2010 and a 30-story tower in 15 days in 2011.

However, the company has never constructed a building higher than 30 stories.

Many believe that the construction of Sky City – if Broad can pull it off – is a sign of China’s growing prowess in the technological world.

“It’s a symbol of their new superiority,” Takashi Fujitani, the director of Asia Pacific studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs’ Asian Institute in Toronto, told the National Post.

“Modernity today is really about speed in a lot of ways, so being at the top of the world is about being able to do things fast.”

Nine of the world’s tallest buildings are currently being built in China.

Who needs 3d printers when you have the chinese. We shouldnt rely on technosorcery to solve our problems because it is actually a magic spell to make us forget and to have the patience to do these things, ourselves. :ld:

America lost....

I knew it was coming but damn if this doesn't just spell doom for "american ingenuity" it might be a tacky ploy or what not but it used to be America doing these tacky ploys to show off our prowess.

Funny thought though. Socialism might win out in the long run lol....:(

that's what I was saying, comrade. all jokes aside, it seems unavoidable (unless something catastrophic happens to society)

I would question the sustainability of it all. (TBH I question the sustainability of the USA too).

I just can't see that many people living in abject poverty forever.

IF history has taught us anything it's that you can only push people so far before they snap. China has done a good job controlling that "snap" since the 80's and the T square shyt popped off. I think the rapid growth though has poised them for another similar incident...i hope

you assume "abject poverty". what if we had the means to support the world's population at a more comfortable level?

I think we already do. We choose not too. 1% own 90% and such. The means are there, they are just distributed in a crap like manner. That distribution tends to lead to revolutions...historically at least.

Outside of greed there's no real reason EVERY LAST man woman and child on this planet should go without food, water, electricity, education and healthcare.
