Decline in rap quality is correlated to literacy. These rappers now don't read books, don't write, illiterate. No longer intense path b/w poetry to rap

A lot of them nikkas in the 90s was dumbasses too. Look at Nore :russ: , even when I hear Nas talk on interviews I be confused tbh is the same dude that spits that shyt?
It's cause in the 90s Nas smoked a ton of weed and was socially awkward. He got a lot more coherent/lucid in interviews around Stillmatic

But a lot of 90s dudes tended to actually be good students that just got caught up in street shyt or even went to college

No dog in this fight, Georgia has a higher literacy rate than New York
New York state is basically the NYC metro area (NYC/Long Island/Rockland & Westchester county) and then a waste land of slackjawed yokels

They aren't illiterate. Everything declined because of social media. Nobody is into reading something beyond 140 characters and that's trickled down into everything else. That includes this site. The likelihood of someone on here reading a long post, no matter how intelligent or well thought out, is low. Posters get clowned for doing it.

NGL even if you read every book and know multisyllables, you are still a "smart dumb nikka", word to Lupe Fiasco.

Heads forgetting that dudes like Biggie dropped out of high school to get in the game. It has nothing to do with books, it's having a gift.

While rappers nowadays are a odd source of entertainers, they mastered what most rappers in the past failed to do:

  1. Ride a beat
  2. Melodics
  3. Grinding without the label (folks forget the struggles of trying to do demos, street teams, and unsigned hype).
This is more yelling at clouds babble and I don't even care for 78 percent of hip hop nowadays.

It's a lot of reasons.

I think just a big thing is the barrier to entry is lower. Every mf with a laptop can make music now. Even something like having to book studio time was a hurdle that meant you had to be serious about this shyt.

And additionally you've got all the corners being cut, things like ...the punch ins, the "producers" who ain't producing shyt, just recording punched in verses one time, no real musical vocabulary. None of these mfs listen to anything but rap music of the past decade. Ghostface was taking influence from soul music, Rakim was listening to jazz, etc etc

And then there's the death of artist development at the labels.

It's death by a thousand cuts, there's no one reason but the bar has been lowered and lowered and now due to streaming most people treat music as disposable entertainment. And that includes the artists themselves.

This.

Lyrics also took a major backseat when ATL/The south took over with smackin ass beats, dancing, strip club anthems, etc.

You didn’t have to be literate to make those records and become a zillionaire reading at a kindergarten level :mjcry:

Making catchy music has nothing to do with general intelligence it’s a niche crafting skill

Lyrics have never been at the forefront of rap. It’s the least important thing in making rap music

Less arts in the public school system, black people migrating to white suburbs, public schools underfunded, yeah that's why I'm not as harsh on this new guys they are basically left out here to fend for themselves

Square biz. Reminds me of the days Phonte was in his panties about "real hip hop" and how nobody was checking out Little Brother's performance outside of Wayne and em.

Maybe just maybe, most people don't want to bar check and just wanna dance. This is coming from a hip hop head. It's all a method of reading the room and knowing the audience.

Sadly nowadays it's all about whatever the hell to move to, and not so much the raps. Is it a bad thing...not really...is it a intellectual engagement...not so much.

It's the grim reality of music. You either adapt to the changing format, or hold down your cult following and stay true to self.

Keep in mind mfs is talking about LYRICS, not a actual conversation. nikkas spewing 5 syllable words in songs dont make them smart, their outlook does. Both of them MFs in the OP are stupid.
