This essentially is in line with what was stated in the Quran almost 1,500 years ago.
The Quran states that there's 7 layers/dimensions of the Universe. We reside in the first one, essentially meaning the 3rd dimension, and there's six more superimposed above us (plus time?, which would make it 10 total).
The Jinn reside in the layer just above ours, or "the 4th dimension". They live here on Earth with us, however we're unable to see them, because they're located in a different dimension. Occasionally, it is said that Jinn have the ability to travel down to the 3rd dimension and be seen by humans.
As far as the universe being 2d and just a hologram:
