Knicks exercise rookie options on RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Obi Toppin
Barrett is extension eligible next fall
The Knicks have exercised third-year rookie options on Immanuel Quickley and Obi Toppin, and the fourth-year rookie option on RJ Barrett, SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley confirmed.
All of these options are for the 2022-23 season, as teams have to pick up rookie options for next year by the end of the month. Barrett will make $10.9 million next season, while Toppin gets $5.3 million, and Quickley will earn $2.3 million.
Barrett, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, will make $8.6 million this season and is extension eligible next fall. He could earn up to $181 million over five years (25 percent salary cap max). The Duke product made big improvements from his rookie season to year-two, bumping his scoring from 14.3 points to 17.6 points per game and improving his three-point shooting percentage by eight percent (32.0 percent in 2019-20 to 40.1 percent in 2020-21).
The last first-round pick of the Knicks to be offered a rookie extension was David Lee (No. 30 overall pick in 2005) in 2010, when he signed a six-year, $79.5 million deal.
Toppin, the No. 8 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, is currently signed to a four-year, $22.1 million contract. He'll be eligible for a $9.1 million qualifying offer for the 2024-25 season before hitting restricted free agency in 2025. The Brooklyn-native averaged 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game over 11 minutes of action in 62 games during his rookie season. Toppin will look to take a leap forward in his second season as a key member of the Knicks bench.
Quickley is currently signed to a four-year, $10.8 million deal after being selected with the No. 25 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. Quickley became a fan favorite in his first season as a Knick, averaging 11.4 points per game while shooting 38.9 percent from beyond the arc. He's eligible for a $6.1 million qualifying offer for the 2024-25 season before he enters restricted free agency like Toppin.
The Knicks will have to make decisions on Toppin and Quickley's fourth-year options next year.
