Knicks looking to trim $25 million in payroll to make run at Jalen Brunson: report
Brunson is set to be an unrestricted free agent, and could return to the Mavericks
The
Knicks are looking to trim roughly $25 million from their payroll to pave the way for a run at pending unrestricted free agent point guard
Jalen Brunson,
reports Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Per Bleacher Report, the Knicks will also be shopping
Alec Burks and
Nerlens Noel via trade.
SNY's Ian Begley reports that the Knicks expect Brunson to re-sign with the Mavs.
Dallas has the return of Brunson atop their priority list, and
he is expected to be offered a max deal of roughly $85 million for four years.
New York has long been connected to the 25-year-old Brunson, whose father, Rick,
was recently hired by the team as an assistant coach and played for the Knicks during his career.
Brunson had the best season of his career for the Mavs in 2021-22, averaging a career-high 16.3 points and 4.8 assists while playing 79 games (61 starts).
The Knicks have been searching for a franchise point guard for years, and were recently linked to
Kyrie Irving, who could leave the Nets this offseason with contract talks reportedly stalled.
Per Begley,
people around Irving said last month that they saw the Knicks as a potential destination if Irving and the Nets couldn’t work out a new contract.
However, Begley added that there were people within the Knicks who were wary of acquiring Irving. And people in touch with the Nets expressed skepticism that they would deal Irving to the Knicks if they ended up trading him.
