Where does this notion that we have no power come from? If every single last consumer stopped paying verizon after their contracts ended what would happen to that company? :heh: You are taking "we the peoples" inability to function as a single body, and wield our power as proof that there is no power, and that simply isnt true.

if a consumer chooses not to do business with Verizon, there is nothing Verizon can do about it, despite all this "power" they are suppose to have.:shaq2:

getting you to believe and spread the idea that we are powerless is the real problem.:umad:

Okay im not going to sit here and act like I have a business degree or something. Im pretty ignorant on the subject to be real. but I thought that the free market was companies working with little to no government oversight. Verizon slowing down their internet or charging companies like netflix more to use their ISP forcing Netflix to pass that charge on to the consumer. Netflix countering that by getting subscribers to protest the charge and making Verizon suffer the backlash net flix had to suffer a couple years ago with their price hike seems like the market working to correct its self. All without government oversight. Isn't this an example of the free market?

I'm happy you admit to it.

Net neutrality, as Netflix wants it enforced, would be a government regulation that denies any distributor from limiting data to others hence not in compliance with a "free market". Verizon having the ability to alter their service in any matter they want is actually supporting no-government intervention and supports the principles of a free market. A free market allows monopolies, duopolies etc since the market, in this case with internet providers, "demands" such a set-up.

An example of a free market would be you and me opening up a store on the same street. We are allowed to do whatever to increase revenue and whoever gains the most consumers are doing the right thing and thus are the appropriate "market leaders" so to say. It is more complicated than that and definitely has several layers to what I said (I don't think any libertarian wants a lawless society for example) but the economic plan is somewhat like the scenario.

To be honest with you breh, I don't think DEAD truly knows what he is arguing for. He just likes to be the odd one in the group.

Thanks for not being a dikk about it. Informative post breh.
Do you agree with net neutrality? A company being able to restrict the flow of information is pretty disgusting. Dead is right on if consumers would stop acting like fukking zombies things like this wouldn't happen.

Look at @88m3 situation. The fact that he has to pay $340 just to watch TV and talk on the phone is ridiculous. If consumers said enough is enough and made a mass migration to a cheaper service they would get the message. Obviously Verizon and companies like it have the legal system in their pocket so maybe our strength as consumers is all we have.

Hold up... part your beef with any remotely collectivist form of left-leaning ideology, assuming you take after Mises/Hayek at least somewhat, is rooted in skepticism about organization and planning, whether of the economy or governmental structure. You can't just switch it up now and say that people have power because they could potentially organize themselves in a market revolt to overthrow this or that monopoly. Organizing people, or rather, people organizing themselves is much, much, harder than governmental administration. If you don't believe in the efficacy of the latter, than the former can't be anything but a utopian pipe-dream to you.

Power is actual possibility, not hypothetical possibility. If you think the conditions are in place for people to mass-organize themselves against corps that way, then you might not even be a real libertarian, bruh.

If the people are upset enough, they will organize to crush things. Dont be such a quitter.

Can you explain what you mean? I'm not sure what you are saying here.

Doing for self is part of libertarian ideology.. and skepticism about organization isn't part of libertarian ideology - So I don't think he's switching up.
He's staying the course - aka " don't depend on the government to fix these issues"... depend on the Market"... and the market can be influenced by one of the main components of the market" (The Consumer)

It's your opinion that grassroots organizing and organizing a mass consumer base is tougher than government admin - you have that opinion simply because that's what we are trained to believe and what we are used to....

but before governments there were people organizing themselves. The initial formation of a Government actually is people organizing themselves- and setting up rules for it.

Dead7 seems to believe in people engaging their fellow citizens and influencing the debate toward freedom, opportunity and respect. Government can protect freedoms but can also restrict them.---and most of the time we Beg for the gov to restrict us, which is sad. Said because it's weak -- just like complaining about an evil corp is weak but still continuing to purchase their products.

my comments were about netflix's lack of power in this situation. they have none, and will get sucked dry by ISPs if this gets any worse. trying to rally their customers to protest is a sign that they have no other cards to play

Maybe netflix needs to be sacrificed so ISP's can be crushed into repealing this trash. All it takes is one good provider to not be on board and the game is changed. Dont let google get in the game and bring the net back to what it once was, if these isp's get out of hand.

Remember when IBM was talking about tiered internet and companies marketed their products without the tier. Thats where people went. I think the market does dictate but sadly, If all companies are on board with the shift, then people may have to hit the streets and become a thorn in the side of these companies.

You have no fight left in you. Happens with Age i guess.

No, I'm just being realistic. Look what happened in Egypt and Syria. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, friend. Anyway, that is besides the point. DEAD7 wants to make that last resort revolting the only option consumers have to deal with corporate domination and monopolies. I think we should have more and better options.
