So. Cal
This seems like the market correcting it's self after FCC looses it's grips on net neutrality.
http://mobile.theverge.com/2014/1/2...ustomer-action-if-isps-violate-net-neutrality
"Unfortunately, Verizon successfully challenged the US net neutrality rules," Netflix writes in its shareholder letter. "In principle, a domestic ISP now can legally impede the video streams that members request from Netflix, degrading the experience we jointly provide."

In a worst-case scenario, Netflix imagines a situation in which it would have to pay fees to ISPs to stop that degradation, but it sounds like the company wouldn't just sit back and let that situation happen. "Were this draconian scenario to unfold with some ISP," Netflix writes, "we would vigorously protest and encourage our members to demand the open Internet they are paying their ISP to deliver."

:heh: Netflix entire business relies on the service that Verizon and many other providers offer so they should just stfu and continue to eat while they can.

Also, net neutrality has nothing to do with a free market.
:what:That's the point breh. Did you even read the article? And net neutrality has everything to do with the market.

You said DEAD was right so I was under the impression that you agreed with Netflix's position.

What does net neutrality have to do with the theory of a free market?

free market is a very deceiving term, friend

Okay im not going to sit here and act like I have a business degree or something. Im pretty ignorant on the subject to be real. but I thought that the free market was companies working with little to no government oversight. Verizon slowing down their internet or charging companies like netflix more to use their ISP forcing Netflix to pass that charge on to the consumer. Netflix countering that by getting subscribers to protest the charge and making Verizon suffer the backlash net flix had to suffer a couple years ago with their price hike seems like the market working to correct its self. All without government oversight. Isn't this an example of the free market?

It is the free market. On the downside it also lets companies like Verizon or anyone with more power bully everyone else. The reality is however that the consumer has negligible power/protection in America. Verizon won't suffer, it will be the middle men, Netflix in this example who will probably get brutally raped all around, and then they will pass on costs to you to survive(if they can survive).

Verizion is a fukking monopoly and they need to :camby:

Congress and SCOTUS too :camby:

But the consumer (in this situation) has another billion dollar company on its side. If Version over charges for ISP usage and there is a strong backlash from the consumer it will work out inthe consumers favor. This just might be a defining moment in the future of internet freedoms.

Netflix can't stand up to Verizon, TWC, etc totally different ballpark, breh. Verizon also have all the power in this situation because they're supplying the service. There may be a strong backlash but in the end consumers don't have a lot of power. I know where I've lived over the years and I've lived in a lot of places, more often than not you only have one internet provider in your neighborhood. The whole system is rigged. It's the same with electricity and natural gas/propane etc. I'll try and stay positive but the whole thing reeks of corruption and abuse.

Everyone is locked in a contract with Verizon anyway. Ultimately consumers would get rid of Netflix before breaking their contract. :snoop: The internet is now just a tool for companies to make more millions.... we're fukked aren't we:to:

We pay higher bills for our services than any developed country I believe I've read. It's disgusting. I pay 210 dollars a month for my cell phone and 130 a month for my cable/internet. Electric/gas I couldn't tell you off the top of my head right now.

just a quick lesson in how the world works. if you ever find yourself talking about protests, you probably have little to no power in a given situation.

let private interest control infrastructure, brehs!

and the infrastructure sucks and is dangerously outdated!
