Wonder Girl is Coming to DC’s TITANS in this EXCLUSIVE Character Breakdown
It’s that time again folks; that’s right, we’ve got yet another exclusive character breakdown from DC and Warner Brothers’ upcoming live-action
Teen Titans TV show, and this time we’ve got a big new addition to the cast to reveal. This news is so exciting that I don’t want to waste any more of your time; let’s dive straight in and check out this new breakdown.
Here it is:
[RUTH GIBBS]Female, 20s, Caucasian or Latina or Middle Eastern, or ethnically ambiguous. Confident and kick ass. Educated. RECURRING GUEST STAR THIS SEASON WITH AN OPTION FOR SERIES REGULAR NEXT SEASON.
We got a little help from our friends over at the
Titans Podcast on this one. Warner Bros is casting a wide ethnic net for this character, but the fact that they’re looking at Middle Eastern actors, combined with the fact that the role could expand to series regular status in a potential Titans season two leads us to believe that this character is, in fact, Wonder Girl, Donna Troy.
Donna’s comic book origins are…messy, even by comics standards. Originally created simply to be a younger, more innocent version of Wonder Woman following the publication of Seduction of the Innocent—the book that almost brought down the entire comic book industry—Wonder Girl has at different times been Wonder Woman’s sister or a product of magic. What’s important for the show’s purposes is that Donna is a frequent member of the Titans.
Wonder Woman has never been more popular than she is now, thanks to the record-breaking success of the Gal Gadot-starring feature, so it makes a lot of sense for
Titans to try to cash in on that popularity by incorporating the Wonder Woman lore into the show. The fact that they’re looking for a Middle Eastern actor suggests they want to line up the portrayal of Donna with Gadot and the big screen Wonder Woman.
Superhero movies and TV shows are still very much a boy’s club, though the success of Wonder Woman on the big screen and Supergirl on the small are hopefully signaling a shift in that dynamic. Wonder Girl’s inclusion on Titans is a fantastic addition to the diversity of both Titans’ already decently diverse cast and superhero entertainment in general.
