I saw backyard band at the Devin concert last weekend.
I never could get into GoGo unless it was a Hurby Luvbug produced song back when he added a lot of GoGo flavor to his beats
Just GoGo by itself I wasn't feeling it. I remember riding through D.C. In the late 80's/early 90's with family looking for a good radio station to jam.... all I heard was constant GoGo.
I lliterally had the face.
Now that I'm older I wanna give it another chance. Any suggestions?
One of the best threads I've seen on here
might have a few contributions later
Born, raised in NY but moved to DC. I knew a lil about go-go from getting out and being around people. But, just never really was into it like that. always a hip hop head as far as nyc originated rap. Kind of funny b/c when I played underground rap or more hardcore rap (mobb deep) etc.., the dc,nv,md people.. would be like "what is that?? we listen to go-go around here, nobody is trying to hear that new york shyt".. and I didnt know what a "go-go club or go go dancing was".. I would get flamed because of that. But I remember when I was much younger in ny, hearing that Salt and Pepa "I like hip hop mixed with the go-go, baby".. forgot the name of the song, so I think go go had some influence more than regionally. oh and there is one song, I liked a go go song that I somehow heard the female go go version of an ashlee simpson song "pieces of me" -

Then the phone rings, I hear you
I never hated on go go tho, just never gravitated toward it.
@IllmaticDelta Another thing I’ve been curious about is whether or not it’s possible to incorporate the Amen Break into GoGo’s anatomical structure?
What’s interesting is that the Amen Break, that very distinct fast-paced break beat that has since found its way into Hip Hop; Breakbeat; cartoon theme music (most notably Futurama and The PowerPuff Girls); and most especially the Jungle music and Drum & Bass of the UK; was created by the Funk/Soul group The Winstons (3/6th of whom were Black) and the group is originally from DC
OP the more I think about it, there really does need to be a DC music appreciation and influences thread because I agree with one of the posters above in saying that DC is such a severely underrated and unsung city when it comes to music and it deserves its due props.
DC blessed The Culture with some good ass Soul, Funk, R&B, Hip Hop, Blues, and Jazz but has created its own distinct music that lowkey influenced an insane amount of genres and subgenres....Distinct music such as HarDCore Punk, Emo, Moombahton, Quiet Storm, etc. And while I’ve learned last year that GoGo technically has its origins here in PG County (Chuck Brown used to live in Fairmount Heights in the uptop side of the county around the time he created GoGo), both DC and PG pretty much share the culture since we’re right next to each other at the end of the day. And of course, DC giving birth to one of the greatest musical ingredients ever, the Amen break
That thread should definitely be made.
Plus, Chuck being born from Gaston, NC and being the creator of something as simple yet complex as GoGo just shows the everlasting bond we in the DMV have with our country cousins down in the Carolinas
