Junk Yard in the movie Krush Groove

E.U. in the movie School Daze

Go Go definitely had a presence outside of DC back then.

It was more GoGo being played on the local urban stations out here compared to nowadays where you only hear it during certain DJ rotation blocks on certain days. Plus, DC wasn’t really into Hip Hop at the time and the tensions/rivalry between DC and NYC during that time period due to drug turf and kingpin wars didn’t make it any better either.

I co-sign all this. Hell when I got to DC you only really heard go go on the radio. I would go to "rap" shows and the go go acts would be the only acts getting ANY crowd participation :dahell:

Yeah of course we listened to the hottest rap songs and artists which the radio stations played, but as far as just regular hip hop artists nah.

Subs. This should be a lit thread and hopefully gains traction.

Also, it’s interesting to know that Hip Hop dabbled in many experimentations with GoGo music back in the ‘80s when come the early to mid ‘00s, R&B was doing that too...Most notably Crazy In Love by Beyoncé (a track originally meant for Amerie), 1 Thing by Amerie, It’s Love by Jill Scott, etc.
That's because the producer of those joints was Rich Harrison from d.c.

With Jill Scott she just loves music, and that positive, soulful vibe. That album got me through some tough times, kept me in a positive mind frame

This, and "overnight scenario", are probably my favorite gogo jams

That bassline rattle the speakers like crazy

Overnight Scenerio is a classic and one of the few Rare Essence songs I like. Hated going to their shows cus it always cost more than other bands, and the girls there were too stuck up. :scusthov:

I used to live on Homer Ave :mjgrin:but yeah I agree with you. I think part of it is that no one wants to take the time to play instruments and shyt. Hell the way rap is now, they not even putting any efforts into the lyrics or anything else :martin:

Oh word? :ohhh: Me and my moms used to stay at City Line Towers (now called Ashton Heights) on Suitland Rd. The Soufside was literally just a 2 minute walk from our building lol. If you were there during the ‘90s, you remember the old Black-owned cleaners in that small strip mall next to the Good East carryout and the barbershop?

And yeah, people be too lazy now to be tryna master instrumentation within the music. That’s why some of my favorite rappers tend to have some degree of musicianship or musicality in their style.

I remember back when any popular rap artist came to DC, they had to rap or play with a Go-Go band or a Go Go band was the opening act

But that was during Go-Go's hey day. IDK what's going on now bc this new stuff aint my thing. I heard clubs barely host them anymore. My cousin is well known in Go-Go and he has steady work so they're happening somewhere.

Zone 6 via PG County
born and raised in PG

go go was very influential early on. How many rap songs sampled Trouble Funk - Pump Me Up?

JYB was signed to Def Jam when they put out Sardines.

Jay Z stole the hook for Do It Again from Overnight Scenario

Last go go I've been to was JY, EU, and RE at Howard Theatre

Even though I'm from the D.C area, I never really liked Go-Go music.

But throughout the years, I've heard many joints that I liked.

Here's some that I remember :

I used to love this one joint that played in 2002. It went something like

"I know this girl named *insert name* from around the way....I know this girl named.....etc)

These lines kept on repeating throughout the song.

Anyone know what song I'm talking about?

Overnight Scenario was the very first GoGo joint that I was consciously aware of as a really young moe back then. I’m talking about being on the cheese bus on my way to and from William Beanes Elementary in grimy ass Suitland not too far from the now-gone Homer Ave projects crankin to Overnight Scenario with kids from kindergarten to 4th grade in acapalla beating on the seats and windows and shyt :russ: We were serious asf lol.

We need to bring that feeling back into GoGo :to: It’s crazy how everybody and their mama tryna be a rapper nowadays out here. Not saying I don’t like nor support DMV Hip Hop but it would be nice if we could keep the spirit of GoGo music and culture alive at the same time and try to experiment with adding GoGo into Rap again; would be interesting hear elements of GoGo on a Trap beat like you do with NO Bounce music. @IllmaticDelta What you think?

Also, Ion like how some of these new young nikkas out here are slandering GoGo and going unchecked :francis: Bunch of hypebeast bamma ass nikkas.

Homer Ave was a shythole:picard:
