i wouldn't consider piccolo a supporting player at all because up until the cell games he was usually on the front lines.

- he was the only one who could handle freeza in his 2nd form

- gave 17 that work and also held off 1st form cell


so that leaves 3 occasions where everyone's hopes were pinned on piccolo.
