Maybe Double Talk Dave has the same ratings philosophy as the late, great Roger Ebert:

The star rating system is relative, not absolute. When you ask a friend if "Hellboy" is any good, you're not asking if it's any good compared to "Mystic River," you're asking if it's any good compared to "The Punisher." And my answer would be, on a scale of one to four, if "Superman" (1978) is four, then "Hellboy" is three and "The Punisher" is two. In the same way, if "American Beauty" gets four stars, then "Leland" clocks in at about two.

So he rated the Bucks/Cole vs Jurassic Xpress/Christian match for how well it succeeded at being the type of match it was trying to be.

Or he's just a wishy washy dikk rider who's opinions on any matches shouldn't be respected at all. :manny:

Pick your poison.

Picture this, Christian didn’t get a 5 Star rating till this match. TLC 1 and 2 are about as perfect as you can get for a car crash spotfest and they basically modernized the ladder match as we know it, and that’s not even counting the No Mercy ladder match or the one at WM16. But nah, this match was what earned him it :mjlol:
It was good but overly long. I’ll give them points for trying to use this as a launching pad for Jungle Jack Perry, but 5*? :hhh:

I agree with all of this. This was the best PPV of all time, no matter the company.

y’all may be about the only 2 that didn’t like it

In the show thread… the response was fairly positive.

Hell there was at least 3 guys that hate the Bucks that’s was even reluctantly like “I’m not a Bucks fan, but this was a dope match. Gotta give credit where credit it due”

Don’t know what to tell y’all

But 5 stars?

just saying it’s kinda ridiculous 5 stars meaning it’s up there with Austin vs Bret now

Given the gravity of the match in closing out a 3 year story, and a 1 year championship reign, Page-Omega rating is beyond debate. Full gear had sloppy finishes and shaky booking all show, but the main event was as perfect as could be. Maybe should have gotten 6.

just because it had a long thought out story doesn’t mean it deserves that rating lmao

There’s been stories in wrestling far greater and more impactful with higher stakes that Dave has given lower ratings for lmao

To each it's own but a satisfying finish is only one part of a match, no matter how "perfect" a storyline is. And I can guarantee you that Hangman winning decisively was the least of the reasons Dave loved that match :pachaha:

Any decent match in AEW gets 3.5-4 stars from Meltzer now. If it's even GOOD then it's an easy 4 if not 4.5+ to him now.

I bought the PPV and the whole show was pretty good but on a classic scale none of those matches were over a 4. A 4.5 or 5 is a match you can rewatch again and again.

It’s always been my understanding that Dave makes the ratings for the moment, and not as a historical guide. How do you define ‘stakes’ in wrestling? This match was as high stakes can get in AEW. The highest stakes WWE matches in my mind were Hogan-Savage, Hogan-Warrior, Warrior-Savage, Bret-Bulldog, those were all 5 stars in my world, WWE can’t write a story to have a match have those kind of stakes and hasn’t really since Austin-Rock
