They wanted to Mel Blanc (voice of Bugs Bunny) to do Threepio. He suggested Anthony Daniels do it.

Glad that they brought James Earl Jones back for Star Wars: Rebels. According to an interview that I read with the producers, he was more than happy to reprise his role as Darth Vader too.
