Daniel Kaluuya's accent in this Fred Hampton movie bothers me...

100%. I could write paragraphs on this but as a 1st gen Nigerian... if a movie was coming out about Chinua Achebe or Fela Kuti, and a Jamaican or ADOS was playing it, I would be absolutely livid. Also its an added layer because he's a revolutionary

If you are not from that country, you intrinsically would not understand the culture that surrounds the plight of a certain community. I would be pissed if an actor needed a Summer reading list and an accent coach to be caught up to speed on such a culturally important person

:mjlol: So should they have casted an actual blind actor to play Ray Charles? Or a Boxer to play Ali?

Funny cause the first film version of Things Fall Apart starred a Ugandan, so I doubt Achebe cares what nationality would play him. Just like I'm 100% that Hampton wouldn't give a shyt about this manufactured controversy.

Was Forest Whitiker as Idi Amin was disrespectful? Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda?

Better yet, Sidney Poitier, Danny Glover, Idris Elba, Terrance Howard, and Morgan Freeman have all played Nelson Mandela and their performances were lauded. Jennifer Hudson was the lead in the Winnie pic.

You are ironically making my point. So many examples of people of a particular culture not able to tell their own story. Its like the movie studios feel threatened by it
The same Malcolm X movie everyone loves.... there was a huge fight with greenlighting the movie because a white director wanted to direct the movie so badly for some reason

An ADOS director with a ADOS lead actor in a Malcolm X movie, such a rouge idea

Whoever can play the role best should get the role, especially in regards to Fela Kuti who basically was heavily influenced by ADOS, in all ways of his life.

In this case though I’m not sure Daniel is the best actor for this role, and I do understand why ADOS actors will feel aggrieved at times, one or two roles are ok, but don’t agree with every major role going to foreign Black actors, there are a load of talented black ADOS actors waiting for their breakthrough give it to them.

I will wait to I watch the film though to cast a final judgement.

I'm not here to play ADOS vs Non-ADOS back and forth with you. Quote someone else

What are you talking about lol, Fela would have no problem with an ADOS playing him if he was alive, he had no problem with being influenced by James Brown either, i think in this case he would rather the person who could fulfil his character the best, if that was an ADOS so be it, if you think different then you need to go research on the man.

Malcolm X was just as much non-ADOS as he was ADOS. :deadrose:

Producers/writers/directors tell the story, not the actors who repeat the lines they're given. :heh:

Ryan Coogler produced this, Shaka King wrote and directed it, Fred Hampton Jr. himself co-signed the casting, but watch y'all fake militants not allow THEM to tell THEIR story.

I swear every fukking Black project gets heat in TLR like nothing else. :mjlol:

The reason Daniel was casted besides his skill is obviously his box office draw. :yeshrug:

Going off on a tangent just like I thought

People of a certain ethnicity would like to see an actor of their ethnicity be portrayed. That's how its gonna be, and how it always will be. No amount of juelzing is going to change that. Deal with it :yeshrug:
To think I would give a fukk about a Non-Nigerian's opinion of how I want Fela Kuti or Chinua Achebe to be portrayed, telling me how I should feel :mjtf::russ::russ:. I love this site

Coli nikka: Why is a black African playing an ADOS in a movie!? This is a disgrace this is the exact blaxploitation I’m talking about! They’re definitely white people behind the scene co-signing this. This is disrespectful and spit in the face!

*A few hours later.*

So you would want only a Yoruba person playing Fela?
