Well, lets address what the article and stats say.
I assume they say that about non-ados in academia because most of these students already have a advances degree and/or funds to go to these institutions.
Then they go on to apply for and accept admission and/or scholarahips/beneits that really are in place for ADOS.
So, its not saying they wont acheive - of course they will - they usually have already proven that. And yes, many come from homes whose parents also hold advanced degrees and have a HHI than most ADOS.
But their placrment in those spots meant for ADOS does indeed stop a ADOS from being considered and being accepted.
These institutions know what they are doing and many non-ados know too - and dont care.
On the assumption that its not a mass number of ADOS trying to get higher degrees - i dont buy it and I would like to see stats.
I am sure its just as many ADOS as non-ADOS in this country trying to attain higher education and do.
But, if spots are being taken - and non-ados who dont have debt - or countries allow free higher education are knowingly allowing themselves to be placed ahead of ADOS it needs to be checked.
The other poster made the claim that there is not a mass number of African Americans pursuing higher education,
not me. The article you're aluding to might be something that he linked to/made reference to
I think the scenario of the 3rd generation college graduate Black immigrant might apply to a segment of the Nigerian American population...but that it's the exception for other groups. The immigration patterns and history of other groups doesn't point in that direction. DEFINITELY not for Haitians. Wealthy Haitians tend to
not come here as immigrants and their children usually attend boarding schools /colleges around the world. I'd guess that the majority of the 5 main groups of Black immigrants (outside of possibly Nigerians) don't have college educated backgrounds in family.
I'm consistent that the exsting immigration laws should be enforced, but legal immigrants should be allowed to pursue whatever their talents dictate. Anything earmarked specifically for Africans Americans should go only to them and their descendants. Anything that is not explicitly restricted should be open to competition.
That is why I am fully in favor of legally recognized ethnic categories, so that there is no mix up, no sneaking under somebody else's banner or eating from their plate) But in slots that are open, people should be allowed to compete.
