It really is a shame that the American state's rights/anti-government political tradition is so historically bound to racism.

It's not just the racism, it's the willful ignorance of the limitations of that paradigm in cases like historical slavery, which can be abstracted to other scenarios, too. The end result is some of its advocates come off like religious fanatics.

All political paradigms have limitations. Libertarianism is not unique in that regard. The problem is that the state's rights tradition attracts a certain kind of person because of its history. Over the next several decades, that's going to change as libertarians redefine themselves as the party against techno-intrusion, wall-street favoritism, and excessive foreign intervention. Those are the issues that young libertarians will carry with them into old age. But even then, they'll need to cut the gold standard and "end the fed" bullshyt out.

Full disclosure: I am not a libertarian.

It would be nice if that happened, but I'm suspicious, if only because it's hard for libertarians to get traction without some Republican ties, and that usually means a compromise on social issues or domestic policy a la Dr. Paul. Nobody is checking for Gary Johnson despite him being the candidate last election, because he's principled enough not to connect with Repubs.

I think MGTP is right though, if we're working from the position that the Repubs are gonna crash over the next decade.

I'm relatively pessimistic about this point. I think it'll take longer, mainly because the backlash against the push forward hasn't exhausted itself yet.

The "Republican ties" you're talking about will become less important as the religious right ages and dies. Libertarians will then take over the mainstream right because the right wing old south money will be replaced by Silicon Valley libertarians who want deregulation and computer privacy.

Is it a sign of change to come that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently hosted a fundraiser for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, or that Sen. Rand Paul is rubbing elbows with Silicon Valley’s libertarian-leaning entrepreneurs?

I'm not saying this will happen overnight. In fact, I may be in middle-age when this comes to fruition. But it's something I could see happening. And again, libertarians will have have to drop the gold standard and "end the fed" bullshyt by this time.

With the exception of the highlighted, I agree completely.
