Long time ago Vince Staples said he had to rap over more upbeat production because no one is trying to be at a concert listening to him rapping about depressing ass shyt over slow beats the entire time.
That's a good point and he has posted clips of when shyt like Hot August Nights was getting played in clubs so you're right, it served its purposeI get it, sometimes you as an artist wanna challenge yourself over something different.
Plus I'm sure he does club appearances and stuff every now and then and if they play his music he don't wanna have straight chill tunes for them to play in situations like that. Probably the same reason Larry June and Wiz guys like that do a trap songs here and there.
