So, my whole company has been working from home since 3/18. We work in commercial sales and today we got a notification for a conference call happening like 15 minutes from when we got the e-mail. I had assumed it was a weekly town hall meeting they had forgot to send out notification for, but actually it was a meeting to let us know they had laid off about 1/4 of the workers cause obviously sales have fallen off a fukking cliff and they're not making money right now.
I got to keep my job but it still felt like a punch to the gut. Good people that have been there 10+ years have been let go. It fukking sucks. My thoughts are, how far will this go? Will sales fall off even more and they cut more people in 2 weeks? I would'nt put it past them at all. I'm sure people got stories like this all over. It just really sucks.

The people that were let go, were not just laid off. Those were terminations. Their roles have been eliminated from the company completely, which tells me this had to be in the works for some time before this. There's no way one week of bad sales causes you to terminate >25% of your workforce in a single day. Feels like it just sped up the process.
We just got the follow up e-mail too. On top of the reduction in work force, they will be reducing our work schedule via unpaid furlough. So, we might not be completely fired but a lot of our asses won't be making money for a while depending on when they decide to follow through on that.
Also, they killed the 401k match. Disgusting

They need to provide more information is all. Few more facts. Something about relative risks.

I agree that the media is sensationalizing it a bit too much. They swung en-masse from denial / ignoring it to being sensationalist.

Personally I think they need to be clear about the basic facts of transmission because it can save lives.

It will soon be policy that we should all wear masks (if possible), and there is nothing wrong with the media being ahead of the curve on that one in my book.
