Newark Mayor Cory Booker to live on food stamp budget - Economy

This guy is setting himself up for a presidential run...I feel it.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker rescued a neighbor from a burning building, invited Hurricane Sandy victims to his home, and rushed to the aid of a pedestrian hit by a car. Now he's going to live on a food stamp budget for a week in solidarity with Americans who feed their families on the government assistance program.

The mayor's office has yet to announce the full details of his plan, but the budget should amount to about $4.44 a day for food, based on data from the United States Department of Agriculture.

As of fiscal year 2011, average monthly food stamp benefits in New Jersey totaled $133.26 per person.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton underwent the same experiment in September, on a budget of $4.16 a day and kept a daily journal on Facebook. Here's part of his entry from Day 4.

So I'm surviving on an apple and handful of peanuts, and the coffee I took to the office until dinner. I'm tired, and it's hard to focus. I can't go buy a sandwich because that would be cheating - even the dollar menu at Taco Bell is cheating. You can't use SNAP benefits at any restaurants, fast food or otherwise. I'm facing a long, hungry day and an even longer night getting dinner on the table, which requires making EVERYTHING from scratch on this budget. It's only for a week, so I've got a decent attitude. If I were doing this with no end in sight, I probably wouldn't be so pleasant.

(Check the average food stamp benefits in your state).

Booker plans to live off the food stamp budget for a week, starting Tuesday, December 4, and he will document the experience on Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. He signed on to the project after a back-and-forth conversation with Twitter user @MWadeNC.

He should do it for a full month to see how a couple of weeks of having to make these decisions impact him...a week is not enough IMO.

You got a pink rep bar also? What is this shyt about?

Anyway, How much is food up there in ny now? I can live off $133 a month for food here in KY. I see that in NY last year the average monthly breakdown was a little less than $150...that seems rough. I went to gristedes earlier in the year and those thieves had the nerve to charge me $2 for a can of tuna fish.

Yeah I think they're playing with the reps again

I think food stamps or whatever they call it now is around 200$ a month. Probably 3-500 if you have children but I honestly don't know.

I know I can't live on 200$ a month and I only eat once or twice a day. If that gives you an idea. One of the companies I work for is involved in catering so I eat for free 3-4 days out of the week. When I was in college I probably spent 3-400$ a month in food eating out and cooking at home. If I had to guess I would say I spend 10-20 a day in food so that's a solid 600$ =20x30. Food is very expensive and its a necessity. Produce, meat, bread the prices are going up on everything and wages aren't. On the flip side food is much more expensive in Europe.

Something needs to be done about wages and prices on everything or this country is in for real trouble. I honestly don't know how people survive its really sad.

This is corny as hell, what exactly is he suppose to be proving or showing? food stamps aren't suppose to feed you, the are just a temporary addition to your food budget

What is the significance of the fact that you can't eat off $133 a month? Food stamps are suppose to supplement your food budget, it's not suppose to be your actual food budget

and the bailout was supposed to keep companies from going bankrupt not giving bonuses to the already rich....Sometimes things don't work the way they are supposed to, but i'd rather feed some poor people more adequately then make the rich richer.... :yeshrug:

I have no idea what your analogy is suppose to mean, the food stamp program is working exactly how its suppose to work, it supplements the food budget for poor families, it's not suppose be the only source of food for a family

if i actually lived on foodstamps, i'd be insulted by this stunt. i understand he's trying to make a point about the difficulty of subsisting on such low means, but the struggle of poverty is real, and one week of political theater doesn't compare to what the poor deal with every day.

Yeah thats the problem I see with it, if you really want to prove a point...then you do it for a whole month or 2 to see how real it is out there.

Almost anyone can eat a different way for a week and then snap right back to old habits.

And as far as dude who said food stamps are supposed to supplement your food costs...some only have that to spend. It's really out there for some.
